What animal is in my walls!?!?

The other day I heard noises in my attic during the day. I immediately panicked and rang my local pest control. They told me to look for mouse droppings, listen for squeaking noises and movement at night. I found none of these so I put it down to birds in the gutters or on the roof or something like that.

BUT... This morning at around 10 am there were loud movements in the wall between my bedroom and bathroom which then moved to the adjoining wall between my bedroom and outside.. I freaked out obviously. Just as I was about to go downstairs to get the phone to call pest control again, I hear scurrying outside my bedroom door . At this point I'm imagining an axe wielding 6 foot tall rat on my landing. I slowly opened the door and to my surprise there was a bird! I didn't get a good enough look at it to see what kind but it was relatively small and black/brown. The bird is gone now and I'm wondering is it possible that there's birds in my attic and this little bugger got in my wall and somehow in to my house? It would be much more preferable than a mouse... I can tolerate birds in my attic for a while but I think if there's mice or rats I'm my house I will simply die. I still haven't found any droppings and I haven't heard any squeaking, but then again I haven't heard any birdy sounds either...

    HELP???

Lay some mouse traps down in a area where you think the little buggers are and see what comes up.

If they go off and nothing is caught, try a rat trap.

It eventually flew out the front door after leaving all the doors and windows open... I really want to know how it got from inside my wall to inside my landing. I've searched the whole house and there's no holes in my walls

I wouldn't have the slightest clue as to how to get rid of them but the best of luck! :P
