NCT Tyre Question.

This query is about Mud and Snow (M+S) tyres.

There have been several discussions over the years and I think we have concluded that M+S tyres are not winter tyres because they are not made of the softer compound etc. Instead they are summer tyres with a more open and aggressive thread pattern.

But what is the NCT view of them? If they test a car with one M+S tyre and one summer tyre on the same axle will it pass or fail?

Is the tyres you have imported part worn?

    All winter tyres are M+S.
Not all M+S tyres are winter tyres. Those who aren't, are all-season.

In relation to NCT, I have no clue.
In practice, I would never really fit two different tyres within one axle, not even mentioning mixing summer, all-season or winter, so I never had to wonder about it ;)

It is, maybe that's why you jumped to the conclusion that every M&S or winter tyre in the country is half worn and imported, and if the OP answered yes i wager you were going to hark on about the dangers of this practice ?

    Maybe i'm way off.

You are to fair about it, I was just going to add that if the ops tyres are imported half worns there is a possibility they are out of date and get an advisory on them, im not saying all part worn imported tyres are but from my experience a big percentage are.

Never heard there was any "use by" date on tyres...

Tyres perish(the rubber breaks down over time, making them unsafe.) I got a warning from the test center 2 years ago.
They were grand about it, said
They just have to let you know
But my tyre had plenty of thread, and just to keep an eye on them.
Had a look at them after an I saw cracks in the walls.
So just to be safe I got new ones

    It's only advice.
If tyre is 20 years old, and is fully safe, not cracked, bulged, and with enough tread, tested can not fail it just for sake of it's age.
Tyres don't come with "use by" date by manufacturer, and there is no law limiting age of tyres which can be used.

Tyre companies do give recommendations of their max life, do you think it is wise to surpass the tyre company max recommendation?

Where can you find those recommendations?

My last tyres i bought 2 months ago came with none.

Set of winter tyres I bought in December came with warranty card and manual, but ninowhere it says about any use time limits.

    Michelin is one example.

    Reason for failiure
Tyres fitted to individual axles are not of the same size, aspect ratio or type ‘(i.e. cross-ply, radial-ply, run-flat, winter or summer)” . See note 3 below

Edit I suspect it would be the tread patterns that they decide on and if they were too different, I would suspect that two wildly different tread patterns giving different grip levels in different road conditions isn't the best of things to be doing

Things seem to have got busy here after I went to bed last night!

Thanks to spook for getting back on topic.

It was a general question. If the M+S tyre is a summer compound and is different because of the more open pattern, will the NCT allow it?

Here's an example of the type I have in mind:

BTW: All tyres in Ireland are imported, there is no tyre factory here.

I think that it'll be more if the tread patterns are significantly different like
these on the same axle, though the manual doesn't specifically disallow different tread patterns
