Night shift and sleep

I was just wondering how people prepare for their night shift. I work 2 day/2night 4 off rotation and I really struggle to sleep during the day which leads to me struggling to stay awake at night.

I asked the pharmacist about pills to help me sleep and to keep me awake but they said to go to the doctor which I don't really want to do.

    I'd appreciate any advice.

A few years ago I did 2 nights a week regularly, I am not the best sleeper during the day and for the most part my shifts were spread out a bit so I survived on very little sleep the following day. The advice I got was to turn off all phones etc, make your room as dark as possible (blackout blind if you can) and try to relax and sleep for as long as you can. Prior to my shift I would literally chill out as I worked in a nursing home so I tried to preserve as much energy as possible.
