Left it a bit late and finding it quite tough to get something,

Basically, its for a couple for about a week. Ideally we would like to go somewhere a bit "different" from the typical Spanish package hol. My gf isn't mad on sitting about in the sun all day (can't understand it) so likes having stuff to do such as day trips etc or even traveling around.

The places we are looking at currently are

Santorini (seems hard to get to)
Zakynthos (working out at about 900 by buying flights off falcon and booking on booking.com which is prob a little out of our budget)
Dubrovnik (a lot more expensive than I thought)

Any suggestions on these or even other ideas are more than welcome

    Thanks guys

I have been to Santorini and Dubrovnik and both have plenty to do during the day.
In Santorini you can do trips to trek a volcanic island, swim in mud baths etc then you can go to oia for sunset, fira is a nice town too.
In Dubrovnik you can do a day trip to Mostar in Bosnia and also can do a day trip to Kota and budva in Montenegro them there is the old town itself and there are good walking tours about the war etc.

Never been to Zakynthos so can't comment on that!

How about Nice?Short flight by Aer Lingus and Ryanair.Once there, there is a train that runs all along that coast.20 minutes to Monaco and on to Ventimilia in Italy one way, or 35 minutes the other way to Cannes. Both have plenty of other interesting stops en route too, Antibes, Villefranche sur Mer for example.Bus will take you to Grasse and other hill villages and into the begining of the Alps in an hour.Could spend a great week there exploring the Riviera by train, short hops, train fare reasonable, most stations leave you central so once off the train you can walk around each place at your leisure.
Actually going to Santorini ourselves in July.Stunning place.Aer Lingus to Athens then ferry to Paros for a few days then ferry on to Santorini.Staying here,

Need any more info just ask.

Love Santorini, but if you are looking for somewhere hassle free to get to, what about Corfu, easy to get to with Aerlingus, and if you fancy hiring a car, there's plenty of resorts to see. Agios Gordios is a nice resort, about 20 mins from Corfu town. It's not a particularly lively resort, but has a lovely sandy beach and very nice restaurants and bars. Corfu town is lovely to visit during the evening.

Or Crete? You could fly into Chania with Ryanair, and choose from many of the resorts nearby. Again with car-hire, lots to see. Chania town is supposed to be lovely, as is Rethymo.

Or the Silver Coast (Estoril, Cascais), in Portugal (Aerlingus and Ryanair both fly there). You are only 20 mins or so from the city of Lisbon by train, so plenty to see during the day/evening.

unless you're going inland, which still won't be cheap, nice, cannes etc are hell on earth in the summer

"Hell on Earth" ?? I think youre confusing that with busy. Why is it busy if its hell on earth?!
The op wanted "something different", theyre a couple, no kids and as suggested the train travel would allow them explore whilst avoiding the undeniable traffic jams.Thats why I suggested the train and not car hire.
