Help me locate a used VW injector

    Hi all,

I've a 2005 VW Touareg R5 2.5 TDi auto with 210,000 KM's which is in great shape and I very much enjoy owning and driving. It recently developed a problem starting from cold (requires 2-3 long attempts before it fires up) and then at low revs (+/- 1,500 RPM) it vibrates heavily but after 2,000 RPM it fires along fine. I've had an independent VW specialist friend of mine down the country look at it and his diagnostic equipment confirmed that injector #3 was misfiring. A new one from VW is going to cost over €1,000 inc VAT which I can't justify putting into a 9 year old car worth €7,000 max. The mechanic encountered a similar issue with a VW van of similar age some time ago and ended up sourcing a used injector from a breakers up north for €80 which is obviously a better route to go down than lashing out €1,000 for a new one. I know there's a risk the 'new' used one could also be faulty or could become faulty shortly after being installed but given I'm already driving round with 4 other injectors of a similar age which could go at any minute that's a risk I'm hapy to take.

My problem is the mechanic hasn't been able to source a used injector for me from the breakers he uses so I'm hoping that my fellow Boardsie's will step up and guide me to where I might source one.

The mechanic took my cars chassis number and used it to look up the required VW part # which is " 07130073f ".

I'm based in the Stillorgan/Sandyford area. Any ideas of who I should call to see if they have such a part in stock? There's a list of breakers on http://www.partfinder.ie/cgi-bin/car_dismantlers.pl Is it just a case of getting on the blower to them one by one? Are there any online used parts market places which you'd recommend? I tried Micks Garage but my search returned empty.

I also checked eBay and this is the same part # but with an extra 'X' at the end of the stated part number - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Fuel-Injector-VW-SEAT-Audi-07Z130073FX-/121332712384?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3ATouareg&hash=item1c3ffe43c0#ht_42wt_1161 - Not sure I'd trust a random supplier on eBay though!!

As you can see I'd really appreciate some help getting this part ASAP.

    Cheers,

    Ben

    Hi Ben,

Try Traynors in Armagh for used injectors.

Also, did you price around for new injectors?
Courtney's diesel in Shercock are very reasonable, much cheaper than main dealers.

    Hi Meeow,

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give both a call in the morning. I don't think a new injector could be justified unless it was less than €250 and if it was I'd probably be concerned about why it was only €250 new

I'm thinking a salvage part for sub €100 (thus taking a chance on it's functionality) or a reconditioned Bosch unit with a 12 month warranty from these guys in the UK for £150 might be the best road to go - http://www.commonraildiesels.com/product_info.php/volkswagen-touareg-tdi-reconditioned-bosch-diesel-injector-0414720210-0986441511-07z130073d-07z130073f-07z130073fx-p-170

A 2.5 tdi transporter has the same engine. A 174hp and a 135hp version. 174 might have the same injectors. Usually a few of them being scrapped on done deal.

    edit: that's only T5 04-10 model btw.

X on the end of the part number means it's an exchange part i.e. VW take back the old one when you buy a new one from them. It's pretty common on parts that can be reconditioned.

Bear in mind there's a lot of labour involved in changing that injector (camshaft has to come off), and that may be what VW quoted for. €1000 for a single injector sounds a bit rich. I'd try the injection specialists around the place for a new one before going secondhand - they may even be able to refurb your faulty one for you rather than going for a whole new one. A used one is risky given the level of labour involved in swapping it out.

    Hi Chimaera,

VW quoted eight hundred and something + VAT just for the part. My pal is an independent mechanic with his own garage down the country. He (and his father before him) have almost exclusively worked on VW and Audi's all their lives. The area around the garage and house is like a VW/Audi scrap yard of the ages. It'a ll Mk1 and Mk11 Golfs, old Quatro's etc. I've known the guy 20+ years so if I can source the part I know I'll get friendly pricing on the labour. Based on what you've said it sounds like investing the extra €100 in a reconditioned injector would be a good move. My pal might be happy to do me a deal on changing the injector once but he mightn't be so generous if it had to be repeated because I cut a corner and bought a used rather than reconditioned injector!!

Don't be so hasty about swapping the injector just yet. I've got a 1.9 caravelle and I know it's a completely different lump but I had a rough running engine and like you had it plugged in and it was giving an injector misfire. But their are many reasons this code can come up so its worth investigating more.
On the 1.9 the first thing to change is the injector loom as it is inside the head and they fail quite a bit due to the oil and heat etc. and they only cosy about 50 quid, I know yours is a 5 cylinder so might be different all together.
On my van I changed the loom with no luck, then the injector, with no luck and it turned out to be a worn lobe on the cam shaft.
Any way I just thought I'd mention it.

P.s if you need any instructions on how to diy anything on your car just ask I've got the elsawin cd's installed on my computer which are the Vw dealer workshop guide I can probably send you some pages via email or something.

P.s I hope your using 506.01 Vw spec oil in that engine it's very fussy.

    Hi Iamtony,

The loom was already changed by my local garage (cost €200) but that didn't fix the problem and the fuel filter was also changed without improving the situation so it looks like it's time to do the injector :(

Thanks for the offer of the DIY guide but I'm afraid when God was giving out DIY mechanical skills I was at the back of the queue.

    BTW, I use Halfords 5W/30 oil for VW's. I hope that's 506.01 compatible!!!

best of luck with it. I wouldn't say it's the correct oil your using tbh it's probably 507.00 that your using. 506.01 is pretty hard to get and it's expensive. And don't let anyone tell you it's been superceeded by 507.00 cause it hasn't.
It's a very big issue with those engines.

Thanks iamtony, I'll double check next time I'm topping it up.

506.01 is the longlife spec for the older VE 2.5 tdi.

Maybe but it's also for the r5 or the 10 cylinder one it's documented all over the internet.
Here is the last thread I read referring to the AXD specifically which is pre dpf. It's a reply from Vw technical and it's very current.

Sorry it's actually 506 00 on the old 2.5's. The 1.9's PDs are listed as 505.01 pre pdf and 507 for those with a dpf. 506 01 is quite expensive and hard to get. Personally I'd be using the 505.01 5w40 and changing it every 6-8k but probably better to get the 506 01 if your going for a longer run than that. Not really a believer in extended service interval oils.

Here is the page from elsawin it's from the transporter section but same engine. Sorry it's a photo of my laptop screen I took sometime ago.

According to this and the link I provided it makes it pretty clear that a pre dpf 5 cylinder must use 506.01 or you could argue for 507.00 possible as an option.

The 505.01 is only listed without long life service on the 1.9 as an alternative it's completely different engine anyway and were getting off topic/hijacking this thread now ha ha

Personally on my 1.9pd I use 507.00 but still change it regularly.
