Business Analyst Job - Career Advice

    Hey,

So, I interviewed for a Business Analyst Internship role recently and have found out that I have been successful. It is with an IT company and my role will be requirements gathering for projects and working between the tech teams and clients in relaying changes etc.

I have completed a Masters that had a small element of technology attached to it but nothing remotely close to what I felt would be needed for a role within a tech company. It is a JobBridge position which actually doesn't bother me as I had no previous tech experience. It seems like a fairly legit internship as I probed into what I would be doing within the role and the opportunity for permanency after the internship is completed was discussed.

So, I'm just wondering if any BA's are out there have any advice about what I should be working towards and perhaps researching on my own bat in making myself be as useful as possible within the role and making myself more employable for the future. I want to make a good impression and also prove my worth within the allocated time. As I will be on JobBridge, I believe I may have the opportunity to complete either Project Management - Certified Associate (PMBOK) - Online OR JAVA ASSOCIATE DEVELOPER SE7 - Online through FÁS. Would you recommend any of these certificates as I am just starting out?

I suppose I am more worried about the tech element of it. If any software developers/project managers want to PM me I have no problem giving more information on the job spec...I just want to minimize identifying the company on the forum.
    Thanks.

    First off, congrats!
I suppose I am more worried about the tech element of it.

Unless you're speccing something inherently technical like APIs, then don't get hung up too much on the technology side of things. As a BA, you have to think about why something is being done, why it's being done instead/ahead of something else - who it's for, what the cost & ROI is - and lots of other questions. Let the developers worry about how it's done.

When you start, maybe ask some developers for examples of good requirements from BAs that they've worked from, so you have a template.

There are some good books on how to define good requirements - I can dig out a link or two if you're interested.

On the certification side of things - some employers might like a BA who's quite technical, some might prefer one who could manage a project (e.g. a release, patch etc) on their own. Personally I think I'd be more inclined to do the PM one.

    Feel free to PM me.
