Weird noises from engine...

So the wifes car is acting up over the past few days. Im not the best at explaining things, but I'll give it a go.

When you switch on the engine, it sounds almost as if shes revving it up and down. I thought she was doing something stupid with the peddles, so I jumped in tonight tried it myself and sure enough it did with me too.

It keeps making this revving up and down noise for about 5 minutes after a cold start. And continues to do it even while driving. Theres no loss of power or anything.. just that noise

Im pretty sure its not related, but just incase, she has no sense of kindness to her clutch.... at all. When she first got the car gear changing was a nice smooth operation, now its always catching and not going into place properly.

By the way, its an opel astra, its petrol... and just off the top of my head I think its a 1.4

Do rpms of engine rise and lower with the noise too or is the noise independent of rpms?

    Good question! I'm not sure.

It'll be tomorrow when I get a chance to check it and will update you then.

UPDATE: I called herself up to ask her could she check the RPM's and said she'll try on her break.

But she did say something else to me that I didnt know about. Apparently the car is making the same/similar noise when shes doing around the 60-70kph mark.

Try cleaning the throttle body and also check the MAF.

Erratic idling could be a number of things. Most likely airflow related. Dodgy air filter, cracked intake, shot MAF or idle actuator, dirt in the throttle butterfly. Needs an educated eye (and ear) to be sure.
