What is the best route and what are possible safety improvements that could be made?

Press Relaese at the start of the year

Local TD, Derek Keating, can confirm that the Minister for Transport has made provision of €80,000 to design and plan the completion of a cycle lane from Liffey Valley Shopping Centre via the Fonthill Road and through the Village of Clondalkin to the Belgard junction.
“I welcome the provision of this money to South Dublin County Council for design and planning purposes.

This Government is committed to doing everything possible to enhance road safety, contribute to better facilities for those who choose to cycle and to build upon its employment policy whereby a grant was made available to purchase a new bike.and encourage those who choose to cycle to work.

The days are long gone when a person who wanted to travel to Tallaght firstly had to go via the city centre. I welcome the provision of this €80,000 under the Sustainable Transport Grant system to South Dublin County Council and I am optimistic that this cycle pathway between Liffey Valley and Tallaght via the Belgard Road will be completed taking into consideration that the Newlands Cross construction will also see the end of the chaos that has existed with over 80.000 vehicles and cyclists tackling Ireland’s busiest junction.

Every effort has been made by this Government to enhance the environment for the residents of Clondalkin and their children by providing safe cycle lanes while encouraging physical activities for both pleasure and work”.

I would think that the route quoted would be:
a cycle lane from Liffey Valley Shopping Centre via the Fonthill Road and through the Village of Clondalkin to the Belgard junction.

It will somewhat depend on your exact destinations. Put your details into this and tweak the settings. http://www.journeyplanner.transportforireland.ie/cp/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2

Part of me would prefer the direct route via Fonthill Road. The Outer Ring Road would be another possibility.

Note the road works at Newlands Cross will probably be going on for another year.

Its much of a muchness between the different routes, but I would give Newlands cross a miss for the next while, too many motorists not knowing where to be or who are distracted by the road works.

The outer route south of the N7 is slow due to the amount of traffic lights and can be full of glass south of the luas line, north of the N7 is a bit better though, some good opportunities to pick up speed!
