Maalin to Mizen

I've had a search and couldn't find what I'm looking for.

I want to cycle from malin to mizen head pretty much non stop. It'll be a charity gig and I will have a good few people supporting with a camper van and other cyclists along the way.

Has anybody any advice or done this before. I was aiming for 24hours but that's a bit unrealistic I think but I'd like to get as close to that as I can.

I've done a bit of cycling with the max distance being 200km.

    Any help appreciated.

    Hey Markens,

I had zero cycling experience before the trip i'm on now.

Sounds great malin to mizen. Why do you want to do it in one day? wont be nearly as enjoyable ??Anyway Be properly hydrated obviously before getting on the bike. I find porridge and bananas the best energy in the morning - slow release.

I wont get into the logisitcs, other ppl can maybe advise better but all I can say is to keep the mantra "just keep going" when you're feeling the strain. I've pushed through some ridiculous barriers this year which at first seemed impossible...it's all in the mind

I've been cycling through Africa for six months now. I cover approx 100km a day but with 60kg on the bike and obv very intense heat/rain etc.I'd imagine its the equivalent of doing twice that every day without the weight/weather.

If youve done 200km before you'll easily do this as a once off, no bother :)

    Holy **** that sounds deadly.

I want to do it in one day for a really big challenge. Probably silly but it's a cause that's close to my heart so I figure it's worth a shot.

Just throwing it out there but would Mizen to Malin not be easier with the prevailing winds. Either way sounds deadly though.

I'm now thinking of Mizen to Malin.

The bit of reading that I've done seems to suggest that it would be easier.

Looking at doing it next summer. Would anybody have a link to the shortest/easiest route. I see 590km is the figure but have no map of the exact route.

    This is one route.

Next year might never happen; why not do it over 2/3 days and then aim to do in one go next summer.

SW is the prevailing wind, it is the most likely but be prepared for it to do the unexpected!

    That's deadly thanks.

I might try a few stages of it this summer but have a few big cycles planned so that'll cover me I think.

That's a long ass cycle to be doing in one day. There doesn't seem to be to many large climbs though I'm surprised at that.

Sounds like a great trip over a few days and hardship in one.

    Good luck with it.

Sounds like a good spot for a coffee ;)

GREAT call, don't underestimate how much difference this will make!

The week gone past would have been ideal for Malin to Mizen, great winds, surely would have been well under 24 hours.

I think the record for a solo end-to-end is around the 18-hour mark. Malin/Mizen is a tad shorter but 24 hours would be still be impressive. Start and finish only are hilly. Main roads seem to be flatter with a better surface and therefore faster. Avoid Limerick city in the daytime. Many do this over days or weeks staying in the finest hotels and eating well, but riding it through is a different matter. Not many in the country would beat 24 hours so fair play if you can reach that standard in a year. Google maps make route-mapping a lot easier, so maybe ignore previous and do your own. If you are used to cycling a few hundred km in a day, it would be good preparation.
