My Samsung Galaxy S2 is almost 3 years old and it just occurred to me that I've never updated the software.

    Is it necessary,advisable?

    Its current version is 2.3.3!

If you are happy with it and don't have any problems then no.

I'd strongly encourage you to upgrade. The S2 has updates all the way up to 4.1.2, which is a huge departure from the very old version of Gingerbread you're on.
Not to mention a lot of apps these days require 4.x and up to run properly.

For me the updates from gingerbread up haven't added a lot but I do agree that the newer apps may not run on 2.3
