I'm beginning to notice a growing trend of young lads listening to headphones when practicing at the range.

Now at the risk of sounding like an aul lad - can someome tell me if these lads are listening to:

    a) Tunes
    b) Rotella-esque positive thoughts
    c) Some mentronome type thing for tempo

    Thank you.

Most likely listening to tunes. Do it myself sometimes while at the range.

I'm not sure but I'd say its more so to help concentrate. People are less likely to try talk to you when you have ear phones in. I know a lot of rugby players do this leading up to a match to avoid talking to anyone talking to them. Poker players do the same. Could also be listening to music to try and keep a tempo to there swing........ Or I may be talking out my arse :)

There's a guy in Roganstown that does it on the practice putting green, I'd say it's techno that them kids are listening to, or else one direction! Either way I would love to rip his ear phones off his head and fcuk them into the river and watch him cry like a girl...oh and btw he's as ignorant on the course as he is on the practice green.

There will probably be a reaction to this thread tomorrow in the afternoon as its probably mainly "auld lads" like me (and the OP) that are still in and reading boards at this time on a Sat night.

And add in the few glasses of wine or bottles of beer while watching the golf on telly and people might be tempted to reply !!

My first reaction to headphone wearers would be..."Ah Jaysus!!" I'd pass very little heed to it after that though.

But I guess..each to their own

    Techno - JAYSUS.

Lads I play golf to get away from it all - the serenity and thinking.

The birds sing to me on Dollymount. Sometimes in my mind they do requests and may sing Gabreil's Oboe

Then in beautiful timing - I 3 putt. With a smile.

Played behind a guy at Blarney last week who had no idea I was there because - as I found out when I played through - he had headphones in. Never heard me.

I see nothing wrong with it at the range - although I think it's odd not being able to hear the strike of the ball - but on the course it's just damn dangerous... and rude.

Here's the 3rd hole (green to tee).

When I'm playing a few holes on my own in the evenings I play tunes on my phone that's attached to my bag. You can only hear it within a few yards of the bag but it helps with the boredom of walking around with no conversation.

Usually a bit of Bruce Springsteen, billy Joel or Lionel Richie for me.

I listen to a constant looped recording of crowds cheering and people shouting "get in the hole" while I practice.

What did you think of Blarney when you played it?

I wouldn't use headphones when playing just on the range/putting green as it blocks everything else out and I can focus on what I am working on.

I listen to music while on the range, find it keeps me focused.

Same here. Listen to Pods normally golf weekly, golf smarter, euro tour weekly.

Other than that set the volume low and stick on random.

This is why music at the range never worked for me. I didn't know you could get Bluetooth headphones.

I tried the iPhone earphones a couple of times but they were too short to work out of my pocket and the strangle risk was also very high. I don't think a ghetto blaster would have gone done too well with the others golfing :-)

Odd as it sounds, did it towards the winter two years ago.

Was one of those "urban myths" that listening to certain types of music would slow or increase your tempo. And to be fair its a decent train of thoughts. In the gym people listen to certain music to keep a high beat and a high tempo.

Plenty of sports people will listen to certain music before a match to get them pumped etc.

I spent a while in the range listening to some chillout music to relax and slow things down. My tempo has definitly got a point I want, but couldn't say for definite if the music did it.

I'm used to listening to music, nearly subconciously while doing stuff. I listened to music while working in my old job for two years, I listen to music while I play videogames, just something I always do.

You'd find alot of proffesional video gamers would listen to fast dance music or dubstep with fast beats to keep themselves at a high tempo which is essential for fast clicking and reactions.

Then again I'm sure plenty of people listen to music, like my friend does while he practices, just cause he hates silence
