    Hey guys

I'm considering changing my current car, an 06 VW passat 1.9tdi to an 09 Audi a4 2.0tdi 118Bhp with 150k km on the clock.

What is the general thoughts on here about this car and engine. Is the 2l engine in the Audi a good unit in terms of reliability? I've heard bad things about the 2l diesel in a passat, is this the same engine?

Is there anything in particular to look out for on these cars? I'm assuming i'd want to watch the water pump, flywheel, etc same issues as with a passat

    Thanks

There's horror stories about every car/engine but I think VW/Audi had their issues ironed out when the CR was introduced.

Are you buying privately or through a dealer?

Is there a documented service history?

I'm buying from a dealer so there will be a 6 month warranty.

Full documented Audi service history. It's a uk car originally but was brought to Ireland within 6 months of first registration.

    What's the CR?

The Vw 2ltr tdi engine which is in the Audi, has a bad reputation for oil pump problems, this is not confined to one engine code or one type of oil pump, there are 3 different type oil pumps which cause problems. I did a lot of research after my 1.9tdi put a conrod through the block. just google VW tdi oil pump problems , VW tdi engines are not what they used to be. there are much better diesel engines out there.

This has been covered 50 million times on this forum already, but no matter. The 2.0 TDI PD is the one to avoid. In the case of the A4, that means the B7 model should not be bought with the 2.0 diesel. The B8 model has the 2.0 TDI CR engine, and that is absolutely fine (other than it being powered by the fuel of the devil, of course).

The only thing I'd suggest is looking at one of the more powerful versions - this engine is available in 141 and 168 bhp formats with almost the same CO2 figures so won't be any dearer to run but will be nicer to drive because of the extra power. 118 bhp is quite anaemic for an engine this size by modern standards.

The CR is the common rail engine which came after the PD engine.

Ok so all looks good in terms of engine and reliability in the A4.

I'd love to buy a more powerful version but seeing as I'm male and only 24 the insurance prices I'm getting for a higher powered version don't make it worth my while.

Just in terms of items that should have been replaced in a car with this milleage what do I need to be thinking off?

Waterpump and timing belt should have been done I assume? What about flywheel and clutch? I know the flywheel can go at any stage. I changed the one in my passat at 170k km. should I expect the same from the Audi?

Timing belt interval on that engine is 100k miles (180k km) or 5 years. Flywheel is a wear and tear item so there is no set interval on when it should be changed but check the car for any signs of a vibration/judder through the clutch.

The 2.0 TDi PD engine in the A3/Golf with the bkd engine code does not suffer from any of these issues.

I think the engine code to avoid in the B7 A4 is BLB.

I have the B8 A4 with a 143 2.0TDI engine and it's got bags of torque but the engineering refinement impressed me the most, and this is coming from a serious "petrol" head.

I've a 2005 A4 with the BLB BRE engine and have had no problems, 110k miles.

I think a lot of these problems are experienced by a few and then magnified by people on the internet. When you consider the amount of people that have issues compared to amount having these it is probably not something to be overly worried by imo. Every car will have some "common" issue if you google it.

More than a few in fairness.... So much so that they redesigned the balancer shaft/oil pump drive several times.
