network cable rather than phone line for sky box?

Is it possible to connect a sky box only with network cable rather than phone line - or would the phone line connection still be a requirement?

There's no requirement for a phone line for SKY install. You can certainly use an ethernet connection (or a wireless one) for the catch-up service. SKY are offering free wireless dongles at the moment. Check their website.

My bad - I didn't state my query properly. I mean in a multi-room scenario - in this instance, is there still no need for phone line if boxes are hooked up via network cable back to the modem/router?

If not, is the callback to a freephone number (as in that case - if it has to be phone line - then I want to block all outgoing calls other than freephone numbers).

Multiroom (or multiscreen as they now call it) does not require a landline for new customers since late last year. You may or may not be affected by this if you are an existing customer - you may have to check with them. Multiscreen setups are now generally connected to the broadband router in the home - presumably so they can check the IP addresses if/when they initiate a callback? The phone line callbacks were to a freephone number in any case. It's years since I had multiroom, but there were never any chargeable calls.

If you had the multiroom box installed prior to December last then yes you will have to keep it connected to a land line. Thats the official version anyhow although others have posted here that they removed the land line and had no issues.

If you're planning to have multiroom installed or have only had it installed this year then no need for the box to be connected to the phone line.

@fat-tony & muffler: Thanks for taking the time out to respond. I guess that now confirms something I really wasn't at all sure of.

The phone line requirement for new multiroom installs was removed on December 18th 2013.

Customers who had there box installed before that date still need the phoneline connecting at the moment, but eventually they wont.

I've had Multiroom (now Multiscreen) for the past 9 years and I've never had a phone line connected to any box.

Check your bills that you haven't been charged multi subs then. I was charged 2 x subs for disconnecting the 2nd box from the phone line (accidentally - I didn't realise it was unplugged). After protest, Sky dropped the charge.
