Given that i have changed over to taking out paddocks for my silage, rather than one or two big cuts, my bales per acre was down around 7 bales.
The price of getting a contractor in to cut was adding €3 to the price of each bale so i said to myself somethings gotta give so i went away and bought myself a second hand JF Stoll 1.9m (6'6" in old money) for €1,350-

It's a dutch import machine and I bought it off Noel Gleeson machinery in Cappamore.
Has anyone any tip for using a drum mower?
The last time i mowed was with a claas trailed three drum mower about 20 years ago so I'm a bit out of the loop...

Keep it dead level when mowing. If it's digging in you'll break it. If it's pointed up you won't get a clean cut.

Check all the blades and replace the ones that need replacing. It'll take a bit of getting used to setting it up. Hydraulic top link is great to be able to adjust on the go if you have one! Theres not much to it really though, just a bit of getting used to.

If the ground is rough open the toplink wider so the drums are slightly tilted up at the front. The mower will float over any ruts instead of cutting into it. Keep it greased regularly aswell :)
