Poor quality silage wrap issues

Started doing some baling today and immediately ran into a problem that plagued us last year, just wondering if anyone else had this issue. Wrapping silage bales with top stretch film wrap and it breaks everytime the wrapper tips it off, so makes job really slow and the bales hole really easily due to poor quality plastic. Is it just down our end or are other people in the country having an issue with this brand? Anything that helps other than not buying the product? It has been driving me crazy and I am considering writing the company a strongly worded letter as the product is utter **** everytime I come across it.

What make is the wrapper? I think it was top wrap that seemed to not liked kvernland wrappers a few year ago, was in a place one day and was given it to "try" as another guy was having serious trouble with it apparently, if it didnt work he had other stuff there, but i stuck it on the wrapper(mchale) and never left seat bar to change roll. The other lad apparently could barely get it to wrap the bale with out breaking with a kvernland wrapper. It was strange but the different wrapper was the only thing we could put it down to

Would that be because the stretch rollers are geared differently iykwim? ps. never used a wrapper just curious.

Not sure, but at the same time it nearly has to be some difference in the pre stretch unit, cant see any other reason it would break as it didnt matter wether i drove it slow or pushed it on to limit it never gave trouble..

Had the same issue a few years ago with a wrapper I was driving for another fella.. tanco 580s? Problem was the pre stretching rollers.. I can be checked, I think if the roll you are using is 750mm then measure the width on the bale before tipping, from memory it should be 610/620mm. Better look it up though!

Lot of the wrap cartons have the measure along the edge of them to show what it should be down to, think top wrap had it actually! And i think your right bout it being round the 600mm!

Interesting idea man. It's a 2007 mchale 991bj. I blamed the plastic as it is very thin, it's see through when it goes through the pre stretch but could be the wrapper I suppose. It is much larger than average, as they are a bit of a beast even compared to the old 991b models may be something due to that.

I will look into that and see. I may be able to make some adjustments.

I wondered if it was due to pushing it harder than the plastic could handle when tipping but even when tipping as slow as possible the plastic just starts to tear.

I will measure that and check. If I could make some adjustments to stop this happening it would make life a lot easier. Where should I start to measure this btw?

Is it tearing from the rollers or is it tearing up beside the clamp? If its at the rollers check there's no rough spots or nics on the last roller, there may be a small bit thats not bothering other films but is ripping this film.

If it's the clamp check the bottom edges for same reason,

it seems strange that its getting on fine wrapping as it would be under much higher tension when wrapping compared to tipping,

It tears from the middle/top down if you get what I mean. So once the ram closes and holds it at one end the plastic starts to tear from the top.

First step is to wash off the rollers with some diesel. You will remove the build up of film and gunk and allow the plastic to run free through them.

Hard to know then, id say kakes suggestion above would be no harm,

Also pull off the little plastic cover up top and get a bit of grease in around the gears if you haven't already, and give the rollers a spin make sure there running free and that the bearings haven't gone and causing them to catch,

I think I know what you are saying, tearing from top to bottom in the centre point between wrapper post and bale?

Is the wrapper post on the right or left?
    What make wrapper is it?

    Re measuring the stretch;
1 apply a couple of wraps to the bale
    2. The individual wraps are easily visible on thw bale
    3. Measure the width of the stretched plastic on the end of the bale

as stated above it should stretch to reduce the width from 750mm on the roll to approx 600mm (look up your wrapper spec to find out)
