From one seller or a few various ones?

It's unlikely to be charged if items go from a number of sellers, especially most of them usually put low value on customs label.

    Hi.

Is this the site you are all referring to?

    http://www.aliexpress.com

    Is it safe and dependable?

Yes that's the website, yes very reliable in my experience, it is not a shop like Dx.com is like a buy it now from ebay, items listed are from sellers, check feedback percentage. Don't be in a hurry, it can take in most cases about 3-4 weeks from ordering or longer as comes from Hong Kong, just check "Processing time" listed on the "Shipping & Payment" when buying as some sellers might have from 1 day others 15 days or more. Also compare prices as same item might be sold by multiple sellers. Most will offer register postage too.

They do not use paypal so you have to use your credit card number.

I got caught for €16 last week on a camera I paid €38 for.
The seller had put the value of the contents at $10 which was written on the package.

It took 5 weeks to get from China to Ireland.
When it reached Ireland, it got sent to customs who sent me a letter asking me for proof of payment for item.
So I emailed them a screenshot of the order.

So they charged €9 V.A.T. and €7 handling fee.
It also took an extra week to get to me because of this.

However,I have got other stuff from Ali-express and never got charged by customs.
So it is luck of the draw really.
I was told by someone in the know that it's more likely to get caught for customs coming up to Christmas each year.

Note that I got two POE cameras delivered via DHL in the UK from a aliexpress seller and was not charged for either. However I think we did not receive the items for two weeks.... so much for expedited.

    Hi everyone,

Quick question re extra charges on aliexpress. I am looking to buy a jewellery box for my sister, its 32euro and delivered through China mail. What extra charges will I have to pay on that?

    Thanks

Depends on whether it gets stopped by customs i think the threshold is around 23 euro after that you get taxed as well as a handling fee by anpost.

Its a 50-50 chance but coming up to xmas an post will be on high alert and be looking to charge people
