Saw this a good bit and was wondering what the deal was. I am looking at a one way flight from Edmonton to port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago. The flight it working out at 372 and has two stops, the first one is Denver. But if I then search for a one way flight from Edmonton to Denver its 472 with a stop somewhere and 750 direct. How can it workout twice the price to fly direct to Denver when you could just book the Trinidad flight and not get on the connecting flight? Just asking out of curiosity.

Few options. Main one is the airline trying to boost sales in Canada and offering cheaper fares to people coming from there as a result. Another is that they're getting the YEG-DEN leg on a codeshare/interline and have an agreed fixed rate whereas booking direct gets you whatever they're charging.

You need to read T&Cs very carefully if going to split off a flight; sometimes airlines will charge your card for the difference if you split the flight like that. If they allow it, by all means do it. You can't do it with bags either, usually - in the US you'd normally have to pick up and re-drop the bags yourself *except* Edmonton has CBP so they could, depending on the airline(s) involved, book it through.

Option 3 is that you got a fare off a bucket consolidator like edreams via SkyScanner, in which case good luck - you likely won't get the tickets...
