Buddy of mine brought his bike in for a service to an lbs today, he's not a regular cyclist and was just getting a once over on it now he's got it out of the shed for the summer. lad in the shop called him a fair-weather cyclist in a humiliating manner... he's not wrong, but its disrespectful carry on like that that sends people to the net for their gear, I'm lucky the two lbs's i go to regularily are completely bang on, but its puzzling to think there's still dopes like this in charge of shops..

Can you name the shop? If its not against the rules.

Had similar experience with a bike shop owner in the south east.

    Some people lack people skills.

It's a testament to the management if they either correct the issue or take care of it, so to speak.

nah, no interest in any naming and shaming, fella could have just been having a bad day. still doesnt matter if you're dropping 3k on a frame or 30 quid on a service, basic manners cost nothing.

Had a bit of nonsense like that from a guy in a shop. When he finally got around to actually serving me, I simply asked the manager for anyone else except him to help me. Manager apologised.

Similar story myself. Went to look at a bike in a particular brand store. Sales fella showed little to no interest and hadn't a clue of the price or bothered looking. It was a trip that made my decision to order online a lot easier. As above manners cost nothing.

I should point out it was only myself in the store so he wasn't rushed off his feet. I've noticed a bit of elitism amongst some cyclists the more events I do. Shame really.

Can you get your buddy to explain in more detail about the "humiliating manner"? Did your friend use those words when he recounted the story to you?

What's the point of the thread then? Someone I know told me they were referred to as a fair weather cyclist, a term which I agree to be correct, but I don't want to make anything of it but give out for no reason with no possibility of an improvement being had, just because?

    Naming and shaming:

Castlebar Cycle Store - Brian tweaked my dodgy gears today for no charge despite shop being busy and the most expensive item I was interested in was a €10 pair of gloves.

Gary's Cycles in Sligo - Kieran and Oisin got me sorted with a new back wheel in less time than the Mavic neutral service when I had a serious time limitation (lunch break on CycleAgainstSuicide).

City Cycles in Cabra - Mark & John serviced my needs almost daily during CycleAgainstSuicide, no charge.

I've had bad LBS experiences, but the good usually far outweigh. Try to buy local when you can.

my buddy would be the first one to admit that he is a fair weather cyclist, but the way it was said to him was meant to humiliate him and did. as i wasnt there and dont know the other fella involved im hardly gonna go naming the shop, just a general discussion on how some shops could be a little more appreciative of their customers regardless of what they're looking for. i had plenty of experience of it myself buying records as a young lad and it put me off those shops for good.
