Buying a car that has not been motor taxed for a while

I'm not up to speed with the new motor tax regs,

On a lot of cars on done deal, the motor tax is out of date by a good few months, what's the story with buying a car like that ?

Do you have to make sure the current owner has declared it off road ?

If they haven't, who gets hit with the motor tax arrears when it's taxed again ?

Is it the new owner or the old one ?

New owner is not responsible for the arrears.

Out of interest will the old owner have to pay any arrears for failing to declare it off road ?

Nobody pays once car has changed ownership.

So is there any point in declaring an untaxed car you are not using as off road, if you're definitely selling it at some point in the future ?

No point, people are even keeping a car off road and then 'selling' it to a family member or friend rather than declaring it off road. I would guess the system will probably be changed to stop this soon.

So is there any advantage to declare a car off, and what are the disadvantages ?
