So I spotted this in my shed on the watering can a few months back, thought it might be a butterfly or something so left it be.

During the week I needed the watering can and so took another look at it and spotted a hole in it and just looked black inside and when held up to the light I could see nothing solid inside so I broke it open.

Inside was just black flakes, nothing alive at all.

So what was it? I figure something borrowed in and fed on it perhaps...or it borrowed out?

Looks to be a cocoon off a butterfly

It looks like a spent cocoon of a Small Tortoiseshell.
