Conservatory conversion

We've gotten a price of 5400 off a company to put a roof with 2 velux windows on a 10x10ft conservatory.

I think that this is ok value but is there an issue with the longevity of this type of job. I am worried about condensation more that anything else. The rep said that they lift out the polycarbonate panels and augment the existing PVC structure with timber. Then they slap an insulated roof on top, plaster and put lights on the inside.

Anyone have any advice on this? Thanks.

There are a number of ''solutions'' to a conservatory conversion.

The question here, is are the aluminium rafters fit for the purpose you describe.
They were designed to take the weight of the Poly sheets.

Structural advice is not permitted here, so I would seek Professional advice as to the suitability of this particular solution.

Thanks for the reply. The existing structure is PVC posts. The company augment these with timber to bear the weight of the roof which is also lightweight.

I'm not looking for structural advice, more to see if anyone has done a similar job and are they happy with it. The company say they provide a structural report at the end as they are a northern company and it's required for building control there.

OK, I am a little confused
The rep said that they lift out the polycarbonate panels

So if the Poly panels are taken out, what is left is Aluminium rafters, and Ridge, or do they take off the entire existing roof, i.e everything above the window frames.

    Then,
augment the existing PVC structure with timber.

are you referring to the Windows here, (PVC) or more likely the Aluminium Rafters, and Ridge, left behind when the Poly sheets were removed.

Yeah they remove the poly panels and leave the rafters and ridge. Augment this with wooden joists and put insulation and a roof over that. That was what the rep said anyway.

So the original roof structure, which are Aluminium Rafters and Ridge, which were designed to carry the weight of Polycarbonate, now have to do a different job, i.e carry the additional weight of the New Roofing Material, insulation, plasterboard, and a couple of Velux, augmented with some additional timbers, which are really there to fix the plasterboard to, which will be also fixed to the original Aluminium Rafters and Ridge.

Can I suggest you should be, especially if the Windows, which are not being removed, are not examined also, their design, and reinforcment, were again designed to carry the weight of a Poly Roof, now you are expecting them, to support additional weight.
