A small group of us are flying to Bari in June and we have booked to stay in Barletta, which suits us because it is on the sea and has good public transport links.

We plan to travel around the region on some days and chill out on others.

We would be grateful for any tips (recommendations, dos and don'ts) from anyone who has been to the region.

I stayed in Trani, which is a short hop from Barletta and well worth a visit. The main rail line runs along the coast to Bari, and there is a small private line running parallel inland, so I made a loop stopping off in towns en route.

This is southern Italy, prices are reasonable, it can get hot and people still keep the siesta so if you arrive somewhere in the middle of the day things will be closed, which can be a drag on a day trip. It isn't Switzerland, a certain willingness to relax and have a coffee while waiting for connections etc is needed.

    Enjoy!

    Thanks for that, Ardmacha.

Did you try and visit Lecce, and if so, how difficult was it to get there and back?

Just to follow up on this:

Barletta is an excellent hangout. Unlike most resorts in the region, it has large sandy beaches. On the other hand, it is short of hotels and taxis. We stayed in the Hotel Itaca, which was very comfortable and very good value.

Barletta is also relatively handy for Bari airport, unlike the resorts further South. Getting to the South of the region may not be a problem when and if there are flights from Ireland to Brindisi, but there are none at time of writing.

I would recommend a car for anyone keen on getting around the sights of the region. We did not have one. As a result were unable to get to the scenic Gargano peninsula, and we had to hire a driver to take us to and from the must-see Castel Del Monte. We visited Trani and Lecce by train, but there are annoying gaps in the service - it pays to pick your train times on-line beforehand. Also, there were no tours locally available

Bari is much nicer than people might think - in fact we preferred the historic centre of Bari to Lecce. On the other hand, I had the best cup of coffee in my whole life in Lecce, where I also had pasta with horse-meat.
