The way we did to avviva and the way the scots are doing now to BT?

I read the scots are making £20 million over 5 to 7 years
we took 40 million euros over 10 years

the welsh can sell their stadium name (theyve had that right since 2004) BUT must keep the word millennium in the title (not sure if they can fight to get that removed too)
even with the word millennium BT millennium stadium could sound ok

cant understand why with their £18 to £20 million of debts and endless financial squabblings, why they wouldnt do something as obvious as cashing in on a multi million pound deal for their stadium naming rights?

    am I missing something here?

Scotland are giving over 'Murrayfield' to BT??? Shame on them. Its in shabby state anyway, suits BT Sport perfectly.

The Welsh fans value their national team and its home far more than the contrived regions, thats a well documented history on this forum, so they would never allow the 'Millenium' to succumb to the grimy dollar.

It's not like it's been there for a thousand years. The Millennium Stadium has about as much significance as a name as Stade de France.

In that case, they should sell the naming rights to this crowd:

What a load of rubbish

Just for so many reasons. You'd think the Millenium had some long and storied history - but oh wait, it's 15 years old and has a contrived name anyway, that came as a result of the funding provided for the stadium.

Sponsorship keeps professional rugby going, deal with it.

I'm not sure why they don't sell rights. At least a ground like Twickenham has history which contributes to its brand ("Rugby HQ").

Maybe no company wants to share the name. ?

Interestingly, the East stand is already called the BT stand in the millennium stadium. Just 3/4 of the stadium to go!

The Unions need to think this through though. Will Sky Sports be interested in bidding for any rugby media rights in the future if every stadium they are broadcasting from is named BT and every team has BT emblazoned on the jerseys?

I think the Millenium Stadium is well established as a Brand and is probably regarded as the best rugby stadium in the world.

You wouldn't want to mess too much with that.

Can we pool together a fund and have the stadium renamed to 'The Mike Phillips is a Rage Filled Nutjob Stadium?'

When an original name is retained the naming rights usually sell for a half to a third of their otherwise value I believe.

    Tradition.
That has been its name for millennia.

Oooh. I see what you did there.

Stadium naming rights seem like a handy way to get a few million in the bank.

The Murrayfield deal could see them debt free and have an operating surplus sufficient enough to secure the signature of all their big names as well as maybe bring in a few names to strengthen up. In theory, it could consolidate Glasgow as a top Pro12 team and assist them in becoming a respected European team, whilst also making Edinburgh competitive in the league.

Given the state of Welsh rugby and the exodus of players, it is bizarre that they haven't sold naming rights to Millennium as well as possibly Parc Y Scarlets and Rodney Parade to try and boos the regions, as they're all nose diving into mediocrity for the foreseeable future as it is. (I don't think Arms Park is owned by WRU / Cardiff, and Liberty is council owned AFAIK)

It's becoming a pretty competitive market though, Thomond and RDS seem to be competing for naming rights as well as Musgrave getting naming rights and who knows who else in the market.

Liberty Stadium is indeed council owned. It is also sponsored by Liberty Properties Plc. Don't be surprised to see Cardiff Arms Park (Blues' ground) sponsored by BT too. They are also said to be in negotiations.

It would probably be more appropriate to call the MS the Aviva instead of Lansdowne Road given how desperate the regions are to jump ship to the Aviva Premiership.

You mean 'The Mike Phillips is a Rage Filled Nutjob Stadium. Millennium.'

That's just pointless. Whatever about forcing managers to cough up that unwieldy mouthful in official interviews, the man in the street is never going to casually refer to the BT Cardiff Arms Park.

Fans adjust pretty damn quickly when they see money going into their union/region/team. Plus it gives them something to complain about over a pint.

No but it'll be referred to as BT Cardiff Arms Park in every single broadcast and newspaper that ever refers to the stadium.

I think BT logo being on the other three regions shirts is the more relevant fact there really.

    Sky must be loving this!

The Rabo sponsorship of the Pro12 ends in 12 days. Pretty clear where this is going for next year.

BT could afford to pay miles over the odds for the title sponsorship of a league in which they now have a major commercial skin, simply for the sake of delivering the ultimate Go F Yourself to their main opposition who are about to begin broadcasting it....

Is it clear? Is it really going to BT?

BT only did it because Sky rejected them from having advertising running on their channels.

Trolls of this magnitude should be championed.

It'd be pretty clever product placement for them to do so. Imagine Sky having to refer to any game they covered as 'The BT Pro12'. Masterstroke stuff.

At the same time they should throw some money at the RDS. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

It will be strange to see so many Pro12 jerseys with BT Sport on it.

The BT Pro12 would be hilarious, worth it just for the wind up on Sky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭postitnote

Yes, The B__T_RDS would be apt after Saturday's result! ;)

The cynic in me sees the Murrayfield, Arms Park and RRW deals as the payoff for supporting the private owners in the ERC battle.

    Musgrave's Cash & Carry Park?

The media rights will be worth nothing when they come up for renewal the next time because Sky will be so pissed off with what happened and then BT will dump the regions because they won't be winding up Sky.

John Feehan said at the announcement of Sly Broadcasting the Pro12 that BT had declined to tender for the broadcasting rights.

So had RTE, what's the problem?

RTE can't afford to broadcast, let alone get into a bidding war with Sky. BT Sport want to expand their rugby broadcasting and they won't even tender for a rugby tournament?

Now they want to sponsor every team in that particular competition! I'd be worried about how long they were going to hang around and how it will affect the other potential bidders like Sky.

Their primary market is UK. If they aren't tendering for it, it's because there's little interest for it in their primary market and sponsorship was deemed to be a better investment in others.
