360 excavator impossible

Hi, I am currently an electrician and am looking into getting my cscs ticket for a 360 degree excavator.
I am aware of the ridiculous rules about doing a 3 day course for new entrants, then after 6 months experience you can go for the test.
My problem is I have a good bit of experience but its by no means pro, If I go pay 750 quid for the 3 day course I will be unable to get work with a "provisional" ticket.
I am wondering has anyone eelsedone something similar or come up with a way around it.
I am thinking of working for free to get experience but I cant leave my job now for obvious reasons. I wanted to work Saturdays and build hours up but that would take me into rretirement.
I would appreciate if aanyone has any info.
    Thanks David
