Restore files to folders from Trash?

    New mac user here.

For some reason I trashed the "all my files" folder from finder - which only had important docs which were in my dropbox folder.

They're in trash now, but how do I get them "restored" into their correct folders back in dropbox and elsewhere from the trash?

I can "put back" single files one at a time, but I can do this for multiple files at once? :(

I've over 6000 individual word doc files that were in organised folders in dropbox. Surely I don't have to do this "put back" for each one?

Select all, then drag and drop.

Select all, then drag and drop.

Drag and drop where? They were all in specific folders in my dropbox folder.

A drag and drop won't fix that at all

Had you Command+Z at the time, it would of "undo" the action.

I think if you log on to dropbox website, you can restore a delete..? Ive never tried it, but I think I read you can, this might restore files to where you had them ..?

I have all the files - but I just can't seem to find a way to restore them back to them original location, other than doing "right-click" - "put back" for each one.

Cannot for the life of me understand why apple don't have this function.

Apple probably can't understand why anyone would thrash thousands of files and then want to put them back into the original folders?

    Quit the fanboy sh%$t mate.

I came from windows to mac a week ago and am trying to learn the ropes.

Saw thousands of files in "all my files" folder, but knew that they were all sorted in my dropbox folder, so thought that deleting them there wouldn't have an impact on my dropbox folder.

I've done research and there's plenty of others who've done exactly the same thing with the files and thought they'd be ok in dropbox.

So in this sense, I thought there would be a restore option for multiple files - but obviously not. That's ok as well as I had them all saved.

I just asked the question here in case it was something that could be done.

    No biggie.

Less of the trash talk, particularly as you looking for assistance to undo a basic computer error. The "all my files" folder does not exist its just a visual way of showing your files. It annoys me and I normally remove it from the sidebar by going into the finder preferences-->sidebar and unticking it.

How many folders do you actually have in DropBox? Can you not drag&drop in groups according to your folders. Look up the Mac shortcut keys to select files individually and in groups. I don't use DropBox, does the restore facility exist on a PC?

Might want to relax on the attitude, "mate".

I found that if you select files that came from the same folder, the the right-click menu includes the Put Back function, but that if the selection includes files that were deleted from different folders, then the menu doesn't show Put Back.

If you are familiar with the files as they existed in the Dropbox folder structure, then you could "Put Back" chunks of them at once, but there will inevitably be some where you can't remember which folder they came from, and it looks like you'd have to do them individually.

    HTH a bit...

First thing I think I'd do is quit Dropbox. Then what about if you went to Dropbox on the web and restore the folders while you're in the parent folder. (by clicking the trash to show 'deleted' files. Then restore each folder which would also restore the files that were in it. Then re-sync. Would that work?

I don't know if it would work.

What I've done is just synced back the files from the back up I'd done a few days earlier.

I didn't know that there was no "restore" function for multiple folders/files, that's all.

But hey, I love the mac and will end up getting one myself when the misses asks for her's back :D

"All my files" is probably the worst thing about the latest versions of OS X. I've seen it cause so much confusion for new users. It's a complete disaster. Why would anyone even want all their different files lumped together in such a manner?

I've even seen people keep all their files in directories on their desktop because the underlying file system is hidden to them.

Ideally you should go into Finder preferences, uncheck it from the side bar and have Finder upen by default in your Home directory, just like a proper *NIX system should.

Very true, first thing I do on a newly-loaded system is hide it, to avoid confusion for the user.

..and the same with Spaces and Mission Control - extra complexity where none is needed - cmd+tab and cmd+` is much faster in most cases.

Mission control and spaces are fine, they offer functionality. As a Linux user I cannot live without multiple desktops.

All my files hides functionality and as the first thing a new user sees in Finder it is a complete disaster. It has some useful power user features I guess but still, wtf were they thinking?
