Can you tax a car with just the reg in motor tax office?

Family member is due to pick up a car later, but it's out of tax a while as it's been parked up.

But if logbook is sent off by the seller, it could be a couple of weeks before it arrives at their house.

So can they tax the car in the motor tax office with just the reg and a photo of logbook to show it signed and date of sale, new owner etc?

You need the cars details, insurance and nct details and then payment. If you know all of the above you could technically tax it there and then and collect tax disc there and then. Ask the seller to send you all the details so you can text it.

You can't use a photo of the VLC or a copy of it. You could "pretend you are the current owner though"
It's a no lose situation for the seller as his car will be taxed even if you pull out of the sale!

Technically, yes you do. But it is overlooked at present.
    Anyway, pedantic point.

Not really -they should be, as it happens, all you should need is the reg & cash IMO, but they do love their dopey paperwork.

Yes op you can tax it without the logbook provided that you have all of the vehicles details.
One thing to bare in mind though that if the tax has lapsed and it hasn't been declared off the road then you are liable for the back tax, however if you wait until the name has changed over on the logbook then you are only liable for the tax from the date of sale.

CERTIFICATE OF ROADWORTHINESS number is asked for? Which I would take to mean NCT cert number.

wait a few days and you can tax it online
back tax wont be due once the ownership is updated
you can request the pin via email a few days after shannon have the log book as it will be in your name even if cert not received

have done this a few times recently

I've never been asked online for it. I also always put my insurance policy as ARB and my policy number as 1

    ...

In tax offices, they dont ask you for NCT (cert of roadworthiness is for commercial tax, if you read the small print on the paper form) and I have never filled in the insurance part for a private car.

Commercial tax is much more strict as you need the policy details for insurance and the CVRT/DOE pass info.

This tbh... I've done this with any car I bought that had no tax in the window and I wanted to tax.

Ohh I know. I've taxed enough cars over the years ;)
My point was that it's technically required but overlooked at the moment.

It's on the form and it's supposed to be filled in. When Local Government will enforce the rule I can't answer and that's coming from an internal source ;)

But it isnt required, there is nothing required on the form.... only a CRW which only refers to commercial vehicles.

I suppose T.Sparkie got it in one with this post above, the car's tax was lapsed by quite a while, so the family member would've had to pay the arrears of the previous owner.

So logbook is being sent off and it'll be taxed when in the new owners name.

Not quite. You're liable from the MONTH of sale.

Info on Kerry Co Council site states that NCT is not required.:D

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

NCT used to be required to tax a car. Then the NCT went on strike and people stopped taxing their cars

Irish solution: NCT no longer required to tax a car :D
