Looking for a bit of advice as to whether I should upgrade from Snow Leopard to Maverick. Has anyone done this on a similar machine and did it slow down the system?

Tempted to upgrade as it looks that Snow Leopard won't get any more updates.

    Any advice appreciated.

What model Mac do you have?

It's a mid 2007 MacBook Pro. I know it can be updated for free but am afraid in case it makes a pig of my machine. It running a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of Ram.

I’m running Mavericks on a mid-2009 MBP with a 2.26 C2D and 4GB of RAM and it runs perfectly. Apple did a lot of optimisation in Mountain Lion, but I have to say I didn’t experience slow-downs with any of the upgrades. I have an SSD which helps, but even with a HDD I think you should be fine.
