hi all, thinking of buying an obd2 reader, but i dont know anything about them. I can go onto ebay and ill be presented with thousands of them, but before i buy one, what should i be looking for in one?

do they connect to a laptop, or are they standalone? are there android apps, and if so, how do they connect?

please forgive if this is a stupid questions.

My car is a 2000 toyota so i reckon its OBD2.

    kind regards,
    redd .

The cheap ones are pot luck.

Buddy of mine bought 2 of the same ones i bought and they went.

    Identical on the outside.

On the inside they were made out of random bits and pieces with nasty soldering and tape.

I have two. One is a Memoscan U480 that connects directly to the OBD port via a cable and covers the basics nicely. I also have a cheap ELM 327 Bluetooth unit that transmits to the Torque Pro app on an Android phone. They both work well, and I've tested them on a few different cars. I wouldn't be hopeful of a 2000 Toyota being OBD-II compliant, though.

    OBD2 came in in 1995, I's say he's fine.

1996, for all cars sold in the U.S. 2001 for petrol cars sold in the EU. Pre-2002 Japanese yokes might have some form of OBD-I.

    TOYOTA-22pin-to-16pin-OBD1-to-OBD2-Connector-diagnostic-cable.jpg

You can tell by looking at the connector,

If its the left one its odb-i
If its the right one its odb-ii

When it comes to OBDII there are a number of protocols such as kwp2000 etc so make sure you get the correct one or a tool that has many installed and remember its very limited in functionality. I had a customer come to me with a 2006 BMW saying he had scanned it and had no codes so couldn't figure out the problem, it had 86 manufacturer codes when read with a proper scantool. OBDII is only a very bare look into diagnostics and wont do air bags or abs in any form

    Bought this one
"Super Mini ELM327 v1.5 OBD2 OBDII Bluetooth Adapter Auto Scanner Blue UK"

on ebay a couple of weeks ago and its very good. Comes with Windows software and the full version of Torque (Android App) .

Android App is handy and pretty cool but the windows app gives a hell of a lot of info.

Picked up an error on a mates Mondeo and gave detail of the error (DPF failure)

This is read only although can clear errors.
Might be better out there but for the price its well worth a punt.

Have used it on an Audi A6, 2010 mondeo and Lexus IS 250 connected to all without any issue

What exact software did you get for Windows? I got one of those adapters but the disc broke and they won't send me a new one, saying I can just download it, but I don't know what do download.
The Torque app does not read error codes from my Cmax.

I bought a obdII scanner and my car is a 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage asti and it has the correct port but I cannot connect to ecu. Somebody said in bargain alerts that the car might not have obdII even though it has the port.

2001 for European petrols and 2004 for diesels must be obd compliant
some models where before the requirement but not all. Web search of your car model should tell you if its compliant or not.

I just ordered an Autel MD801 from ebay. Covers most cars over the last 20 years with obd2. This particular model scans and clears engine, abs, transmission and service light. Loads of them just scam he engine, but i wanted one to cover most things. Its costing £130 free delivery from UK. Ex display. The advertised price is higher, but i called the seller and struck a deal. Look it up and if interested, its the seller selling the ex display models.

There is a guy in drumcondra selling the ms509 (i think) on adverts. It just covers the engine and service light. If you collect, he agreed a price of 65 down from 70.
