Hi, Myself and the bother are traveling to Sydney in November for two weeks and are just wondering about suggestions for maybe a one or two day stopover on the way or returning. I realize the stopover will probably depend on which airline we book with.

If you fly with one of the UAE airlines it should be possible to get a stopover in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

I went to Bangkok with Etihad a couple years ago and I had a one day layover in Abu Dhabi on the way back, it was more than enough to see the sights and get a feel for the city. It was also good to break up the long journey home.

Cheers fot that..went to dubai last year for a couple of days so been there..done that, bangkok might be a good option, would one day be enough or would you need more time.

A rational way of looking at it is to divide the route into even lenghts. On a great circle route from Dublin to Sydney, Beijing is half way but no direct flights from Dublin so you would have to go to London, Amsterdam, Paris etc first. Alternatively you could do three legs: Dublin - Abu Dhabi or Dubai, then onwards to Singapore, and the final jump to Australia. Each sector is around 7 - 8 hours so no massively long flights and you get two stopovers.

Bangkok is a very hit or miss city. Its fast paced and quite in your face. There is more than enough to see and do it but I'd would check out some other threads on Bangkok to see if its your kind of city. Personally I was there for 2 days and couldnt wait to get the hell out of it.

Another option would be Malysia Airlines, they do great fares from Dublin to Australia. I got open-jaw return flights for less than €700 last November. Their route is Dublin - London or Amsterdam - Kuala Lumpur - Australia. Ive never been to KL before but might be worth checking out.
