Driving too slow for gear

Someone I know does this all the time and it really bugs me!
They go up through the gears fine but when it comes to slowing down they leave it until the engine is chugging and juddering and about to stall before they finally reach for the lever.

Surely that's got to be bad for something mechanically? I need an argument to make them stop doing it.

Ask them are they best friends with their mechanic

if they answer no, just say well with the way you're driving, you're going to be very soon, or something that implies them being poor from spending all their money on a new clutch

I kind of have the opposite problem. If you're moving along slow in traffic and you have to make the hard decision to whether
a. go down to first and more than likely the car will jump down slightly, or
b. go into second and it'll struggle a tad for a few seconds

Do ye thing it'll seriously do the clutch? Oh god, it makes me cringe! I want to yank the thing into neutral just to save the poor car!

It will prematurely wear it alright.

That being said i would just keep shtum and be glad of the lift that's keeping you away from the peasantmobile.

Yeah, my OH is one of those drivers, he's murdered a clutch or two in his time. He's also a tendancy when speeding up to be slow to change gears.

Buy an automatic. And if you don't want to do that, a large V8 petrol manual would solve the problem too

Or get something with a side-valve flathead engine, they can run at much lower revs.

It'll do more than feck up the clutch too. Long term it's causing excessive engine wear.

Clutch gearbox and engine will suffer, not necessarily in that order.
It will be a painful lesson.
