A Thread About Clans

    Howdy folks.

I've recently returned to PC gaming after a few years away (having been busy with work and what have you) and I'm wondering if clans and guilds are still relevant? It seems like the rise of Steam (and the console equivalents) have kinda made them obsolete, or maybe they're only relevant to specific games?

I was in a clan for a few years in the 2000s, but I wandered away as the clan grew in size and the average member age dropped (whereas I seemed to be getting older for some weird reason?). We played a bit of everything, and covered nearly every genre, and it was great craic for a while! So much so that now that I'm back in the PC game, I've been looking around for a new group.

Problem is, there just doesn't seem to be as many options now. Ya have your elite eSports crews, and your clans focused on the huge specific franchises like WoW, CoD, Battlefield etc, but there aren't many obvious resources for finding and joining more relaxed, general gaming clans (or maybe there are and I just suck at searching).

Steam groups (I assume boards.ie has it's own?) could be a good starting point I suppose, but it's nice to have more in common with the people you game with. Age for instance would be very important to me. Ditto maturity - I just can't be dealing with the drama these days!

So, what has been your experience with clans and guilds? Reckon they still have a place, or are they a relic of a bygone era? :pac:

They're still around. Guilds for WoW, but due to the lack of new competitive games, some clans are just groups of lads that share the love of gaming.

There are still multi-gaming communities around, 1PARA coming to mind as I have played on their BF4 servers lately, and note that they have other sections (CoD, etc).

I'm still in TiG, and we still get together and game. Currently a few of us are play Wastelands, still have a few playing DayZ as well I think, and some other games.

GaelLords are also still about. They play a few different games, although I only gamed with them in ARMA.

I assume the Celts are still around, although I haven't had much interaction with them lately.

I suppose it really comes down to what sort of games do you like to play? And go from there.

Well, that's the thing - no one specific game, nor genre even. My previous clan played L4D, TW series, Civ, Counter Strike, Silent Hunter etc etc. Games I'm looking forward to playing most in the next year or two include Evolve, The Division, Civ Beyond Earth and Star Citizen. So pretty varied.

I'll take a looksee at the ones you linked, thanks.

Was in 2 clans a long time ago DADS MOHAA clan and TIG irish feckwits clan.

Fairly sure you predict how all clans will go and the people in them.

    Money
    Time
    Competing

And the people who have adverse opinions for and against those.
