    Hey,

So I am in the need of some dental care and would love to get some advice on getting it done up north. I have a tooth that either needs a root canal & crown or I have slight over crowding on that side so could get it pulled and train tracks to close the gap. It's only 4 from the front otherwise I'd get it pulled! It's in a pretty bad way and the dentist agreed spending a lot of money on a crown could be a waste as there's not much tooth left!

Help! I don't know what to do! Looks like would be 3-4k to get train tracks in Ireland!!!

Prices are much the same these days - get quotes from local dentists for the work. Remember to claim back on you tax at end of year. 20% can be claimed back.

Current over the counter exchange rate is 1.26 + then travel costs and follow up. So it would need to be a massive saving to be worthwhile.

I know this place in carlow claims to be very keenly priced and get good reviews http://www.carlowdentalcentre.ie/ That will just give an example.

I don't know exact figures but my mother always goes to Newry to go to the dentist. She drives all the way from Clare and swears it's still much cheaper.

On the other hand, I have a friend whose parents once went to HUNGARY to go to the dentist. The travel costs, hotel & living expenses AND appointment all ended up being cheaper than just going in Ireland! Maybe look into that? :P

Just to point out, if you get it done in Hungary you basically have zero comeback if anything goes wrong.

I would only go based off first hand information of a close friend.
I'm iffy enough about picking dentists at home let alone in another country !

I priced getting work done in the north but there was not a big enough difference. I did use the difference to get a better price from my own dentist though. And to be fair he has been there for other issues and never charged for dropins when I needed things checked or for temp repairs to keep me going before the 'big' job. That kind of service counts for a lot.

I know a guy who saved a lot by going to Hungary and he was happy with it but he did need a lot of expensive work done.

    Hi
I went to Newry recently to have a root canal and crown done cost me 750 euro V 1700 In Dublin this was after pricing around . I live in South Dublin and it took just over a hour in the car for each visit . Also got a Med 2 form when the work was completed. I don't know if your current dentist mentioned the success of a root canal is about 80% just fyi. PM me if you want the name of the dentist I used.

At €1700 I suspect you are referring to having it done by an Endodontist (specialist in root canals) where success rates would be over 95%. Your crown now depends on the success of the root canal in the long term, many dentists refer to an Endodontist if the tooth needs a crown afterwards as there is a greater assurance of success. It's like making sure you have a high quality foundation before you build a nice house, if the foundation is good it will last a lifetime, if the root canal treatment is good the crown may last a lifetime, if foundation and root canal are only ok, then ......., like all things in life, only time will tell.

If the root canal was to be done by a general dentist ( the high price makes me sceptical) then you have made a nice saving.

If you live in south Dublin, a very quick check online will gve you Seapoint clinic in Blackrock with root canals from €695 http://www.seapointclinic.ie/fees-offers.html
