    I'm a beginner/moderate cyclist and want to maybe head to the Gap of Dunloe at the weekend (driving from Cork).

    Can anyone give me an Idiot's Guide to it?

    Where to park?
    What route?
    Directions?
    Average time involved?
    I saw something about a ferry, necessary?
    Is it a loop?

    All basic info appreciated.

    Thanks!
    C

    A lot of information on the following link;

    http://www.kerrycycling.com/2010/03/gap-of-dunloe-and-the-black-valley/

    Outside of the above, see my answers below;

    Where to park: Anywhere in Killarney. Best would be in the INEC carpark beside the Gleneagle.

    What route: See map
    Directions: See map
    Average time involved: Depends on your speed but you will find it hard/difficult to cycle fast in the Gap/Black valley. At a guess, over 2hrs total time
    I saw something about a ferry, necessary: Not required
    Is it a loop: Yes, you climb up to Molls gap and come back into Killarney on that main road.

    I've cycled it a few times and it is a lovely cycle. Three tough climbs, 2 on the way into the valley and one climbing out up to Molls gap.

    This sportive is on on Sunday, it takes in the gap of Dunloe on the 90km and 120km routes. If that sounds like too much here's a map of a nice loop from Killarney. One of my favourite cycles! http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2535052
