Preferences? Our house is already wired for an alarm but not fitted. Is a wired system old-fashioned now and is wireless the way to go? Phonewatch are quoting €699 for their wireless system which seems to compare to a basic wired one.

Which would be the more reliable? It's just a basic alarm we need.

Wireless detectors need batteries and on average last 3 years. I think it would be crazy not to utilise the cables which are already in your home.
Are they on the windows/ doors or just in the corner of each room?
For God sake do the maths on the PW offer. That price looks wonderful but you will be signing up to a 3 year contract that will actually cost you €1,600.
Get yourself 3 prices from local registered installers, each and everyone can either connect you to other reputable and registered monitoring stations which invariably charge a lot less than phonewatch.

With them all you are buying is a name. Have a look at the various threads here and the amount of people who want to move away from them.
The issues with their current offering is, they are beams with cameras in them, now if you don't mind strangers seeing the inside of your home, or someone rushing to switch off the alarm half dressed in the middle of the night then work away.
Also these systems rely solely on GSM communication, Google GSM blocker and see how much the burglars have to pay to get one.

By the way there is nothing old fashioned about cables, the exact same technology can be utilised in both a wired and wireless system.

Wired would be preferable if the wires are in place. Wire free is also good for areas that have not being cabled so a hybrid system is the best way to go in your case. Even if you have no intention to use wire free now its good to have it built into the system you decide to have installed.

The phonewatch package does work out expensive but they cover the costs for any emergency call outs such as the fire service which charge €500. Some insurance companies will cover this but it will cost you more in the end.

Use any wires available. The risco lightSYS has a nice touchscreen keypad and has 8 hard wired zones and supports wireless detectors. It has a free app you can setup yourself.

If the phonewatch package is attracting you because of the motion PIR cameras then take a look at the Risco Agility 3 panel. It supports 4 wired zones and 32 wireless zones and also has a free app you can connect up yourself.

The motion PIR cameras on the Phonewatch system take 3 photos each upon any sensor activating. By the time someone goes to turn off the alarm the photos would be well taken. The PIR camera in the hallway would normally be off at night so walking pass it after the original photos have been taken wouldn't cause more photos to be sent. Now if you were to walk into an area when the motion is armed and you were half dressed then yes the monitoring station would receive 3 photos.
