hey im hoping to get some help

im 27 years old and have been working as a mechanic in the same garage for 9 years went through my 4 years training with fas etc, id rate myself as very good at what I do and I feel like im pulling more than my weight in work,

I went through my fas training and received my training allowance etc but when I got qualified my wages actually went down and haven't moved since that was 5 years ago and im still in the same boat getting just 440 per week now with 9 years total expierence behind me, while I was making 450.73 in my phase 6 training..5 years with no movement what so ever is ridiculous and it been blamed on the downturn of course but we are just as busy as we ever have been..

I contacted fas and they sent me out details of training allowances and the 4th year rates is 527 euro alot more than im making today. 87 euro per week less than a mechanic with less expierence

so have anyone here been or is currently a mechanic in a main dealer and would like to tell me how much they make?

because if I don't have a chance of making a decent living im going to walk awal from the trade and head to Australia I feel like im stuck in limbo with this job spending my salary every week...

I understand I can do nixers but I don't want to be under a car after work every night after work to make decent money

Could possibly set up your own business in the future? Is the money better in Oz for mechanics for sure? Can you get a long term visa? Because with working holiday visa you can only work for six months with one employer.

Would be nervous about setting up my own business and I wouldn't have a big client base
As for Australia my friend is there and I'd have long term sponsor ship and wages of 1200 euros per week cost of living is more expensive but I would be better off, I love ireland and I'd hate to leave and I love my job but there isn't money in it at my current rate and I'll never be able to buy a nice house or have a family on that wage

You are 27 , I think u should on a sheet write up pros and cons of moving .
Although the money is a factor there would need to be other factors as well . Pros already money better, possible progression, sun, friends network there already, no family commitments right now etc. did I mention sun.

If every thing was based on money u would not have stayed where you are for this length so re check your loyalty to the place and then seriously review if this was used to keep u there . If a busy place I'm sure your boss was delighted with himself paying that .
Now think another way if u were offered 1000 a week to work some where else in ireland would u stay?

I honest would say if I was to get paid enough here I would stay but I don't see me earning anything that will provide me with a good life the houses I'd be able to afford here on my salary aren't what I want to live the rest of my life In

Is that 1200 euros and not australian dollars? Still, even if its dollars, thats double your money, doubt things are twice as expensive there - and your in oz...sunshine, barbeques, beaches and kangaroos.

Have you applied for other jobs here? I'd be trying that before looking overseas.

Did you read this thread at all lol :-)

Yes, I read the bit where it says "have been working as a mechanic in the same garage".

Then i read the bits where you were complaining that your training allowance was higher than the wages you're getting now you're qualified. Possibly because you were on some sort of welfare while training, and now you're just on regular wages.

In general, the first way to get higher wages is to justify to your manager how your contribution to the business has increased profitability, and ask for it. Or the other common way is to apply for a higher-level position or one in another company.

Maybe you have done both of these things, and not mentioned them in your post. Or maybe you haven't. And that's why I asked the question.

(And if you haven't, then I'd worry about whether you have the gumption to make a success of moving to Australia.)

As a mechanic myself I can tell you that your well within your rights to a raise and a serious one at that.
Do they depend on you for a lot of work? If so then you could give them a number and say I want that or I'm gone. They won't want to lose you.
Also your qualified over 5 year and should've gotten at least two raises since then.
I know some of the lads in my place are on over 22:50 an hour.

Well said. No boss is ever gonna give you money, it's up to you to tell him what you want. Your 27 not 17, grow a pair and tell him you want a raise. A good tip is to have another job lined up or make him think that. :D

And if he says no, don't just pack up, think about your redundancy off him, slow right down until he lays you off...with a nice little cheque...

Good advice there lads I really should have grown a pair a long time ago iv been getting penny's for 5 years now, the only reason I put up with it is because it's a great place to work very close to home but now that I'm looking to buy a house if I was to stay in Ireland it's time to grow a pair it's hard when your boss is more of a friend than a boss but I need to talk about this just hope it doesn't make work life awkward, there is only 3 mechanics here one is older and slowing down now the other is only starting off in the trade, I would be the main man when it comes to the big jobs etc,

How much is a reasonable amount to ask for? I only want what a good qualified mechanic gets in other garages but what is that ?? 550?
