Packing bikes for flight (Aerlingus / Dublin Airport)

I'm going to Spain on 2nd June, to cycle off-road (moderately) from Avila to Santiago.

I need to bring two bikes on board - they are quite sturdy tourers/trekking bikes with big tyres.

Do I need to pack them completely in cardboard/bubble wrap so they can be handled as package, or can I only "flatten" them by turning handlebars and removing pedals (and protecting sensitive bits of course) so they can be wheeled onboard?

I "flattened" my Bike from Brussels > Cork.

The staff at Brussels were a bit miffied it wasn't boxed but I told them it was Airline Policy other than that, no issues.

I would pack them up in cardboard bike boxes from your local shop and protect all the relevant parts. I normally strap my helmet over the derailleur and put the pedals in my handlebar bag. You will need to lower or remove the saddle to fit the height of the box and turn the handlebars. You may also need to remove the front wheel. No need to let air out of tyres and be sure and pack as much of your personal belongings into the box while staying under the weight. This may mean you dont need to check other baggage.

I flew back from Santiago last year and for 11 euro they provided a box, packing tape and an area to work in so you dont need to worry about the return trip too much..
