So just under 5 years ago,4 yrs and 8 ish months ago I availed of vrt exemption to bring a car into the state. since then I have moved out of the state for 3 yrs and again find myself in the position of a move back to ireland again.

VRT rules suggest I can not avail of the vrt exemption again during the 5 year period. Question I have is has anyone been in this position before and anyone know if there is a bit of discretion shown if the 5 year period is almost up?

You apply to revenue for the exemption so I would say 5 years means 5 years. Can you just wait.?

can you not just bring it home, but keep it registered at the overseas address for the next 4 months? and make sure it is taxed

Or just bring it back and drive it here (assuming you don't have an ROI license)??

I tried that but got shafted cause I was living here.

    Sorry for the late reply

I can't really delay registering because 1. I'll need it on a daily basis and 2. The registration process starts from when I would move back and if asked to prove the date I moved back id be screwed.

Leaving it at an address abroad could work but that brings me back to point 1 and 2 above. They have covered everything

I would even agree to a longer period of no sale after registration if that was a possibility
