If you could only keep 5 players from your team who would they be?

  • 14-05-2014 12:38am
    #1

also 1 player from your teams history that you could bring back as a youngun

also reasons do you have for not picking any stars you left out

this thread was over on reddit and i saw some surprising answers so im curious as to what i will get over here (on a more educated forum ;) ) and its something footbally to talk about

    my current 5 would be

    nick foles
not as good as last season stats but he is a good qb and hes young.

    jason kelce
top 3 center in the league only 26 and a perfect fit for chip kellys offense

    lane johnson
no 4 pick last year only 24 and again perfect for the offense

    lesean mccoy
i felt like i should pick someone else here due to how available running backs are but i just couldn't leave shady off here at 25 he should still have a few years of top production under him and there are few running backs more enjoyable to watch in the league.

    brandon boykin
needed a defender and was tempted by a few others but im going for potential here boykin played very well in the nickel last year but i think he can be moved outside.

    historic player:

    brian dawkins
was tempted by reggie white, randall cunningham, steve van buren and concrete charlie (who although a similar player i never got to see play) but dawkins is my favorite player off all time. chip kelly will love his versatility he's an elite in the box and zone coverage safety and he brings the same leadership as guys like ray lewis.

trying to decide a 5th player was frustrating i thought we had more young talent than we have hell i was tempted to select jordan matthews and i didnt want to pick old players. age was the reason i didnt pick the likes of jason peters and evan mathis. the main threat to boykins spot was fletcher cox and cedric thornton.

    Peterson - just cos!

Patterson - dynamic young receiver, runner and kick returner. Very exciting.

Matt Kalil - Should be a high end LT for the next decade

Harrison Smith - Fearless tough tackler with underrated speed and good ball skills

Xavier Rhodes - Showed just enough at the tail end of last season to suggest he'll be an excellent corner in future.

Past player - A young motivated Randy Moss

believe it or not someone on the other forum didnt pick peterson said he was done :D i couldn't believe it.

ye certainly dont have any issues with young talent if ye can manage yere cap ye should be a real force in a few years.

and i love the randy moss pick i maintain he would have been better than jerry rice if he was more motivated

Joe Flacco - Ravens fans know about years and years of below average QB play, no more

Lardarius Webb - best defensive back in the league. I wouldn't swap him for Revis or Sherman, no way

Terrelle Suggs - when on form can be defensive player of the year. I know he's over 30 but hopefully has 3 good years left

Eugene Monroe - best offensive lineman on the team, can be the LT for several more years.

Torrey Smith - he's no superstar but hes young, talented, explosive and a top class character. He can improve yet more

Ray Lewis back from retirement - need I say more.

Yep, I left out Ray Rice as I doubt he finishes his 5 year contract and Haloti Ngata may well retire after this season.

Tom Brady- because he's the greatest ever

Mayo- real leader on defense, great LB

Revis- probably the best CB in the game, can't wait to see him in a Patriot jersey

Gronk- a beast when fit, unstoppable.

Mankins- brings aggression, never backs down.

Moss- That 07 season he was unbelievable, a young Moss in the team now would make us superbowl favorites.

Victor Cruz - Best slot receiver in the league and the potential for a big play at any moment

Justin Pugh - Turned me from a cynic to a believer in a short space of time. Was the best rookie RT by the end of the year and the only bright spot on a horrid line last year. Locked down as RT for the next decade and if things go badly on the other side wouldn't mind him getting a shot at LT

Jason Pierre-Paul - A back injury has slowed him the past year & a half but hopefully he bounces back to his best this year now.

Jonathan Hankins - Had I wrote this 3 months ago Linval Joseph would have been he choice and I'm still pretty annoyed we left him walk. Hankins is a big aul beast in the middle of the line and showed encouraging signs during limited playing time last year

Will Hill - On pure talent one of the top 5 safeties in the NFL. Currently waiting to see if he gets his 3rd suspension in 3 years for drugs use but he is just so good that I will pray that it's the final one and that he gets his act together going forward

    Historic Player - Michael Strahan

It was an easy choice between Strahan & LT. I have never seen LT play so Strahan it is. He would form a formidable pass rush with JPP and immediately improve all of our D

If we're including age, and taking it as starting over again, i.e. a fantasy draft similar to Madden, then...

Darrelle Revis (28) - best CB in the league, and has been for a number of years now.
Jerod Mayo (28) - One of the best ILBs in the league and the leader of our defence.
Rob Gronkowski (25) - Hoping he gets fit, and hoping the change of team doctor sorts him out. Goes without saying what he brings to the table.
Chandler Jones (24) - Very impressive rookie and sophomore seasons, expect him to get better and better.
Devin McCourty (26) - One of the best safeties in the league.

If it's a one-off season, then obviously Brady and Mankins come into the equation, Vince too if he's healthy.

1 player from our history - Brady if I'm allowed, if not then of course Randy Moss.

    49ers:

    Patrick Willis
    Navarro Bowman
    Colin Kaepernick
    Vernon Davis
    Eric Reid

    One from History:

    Jerry Rice.

I'm assuming the current players are as they are now. If at their prime I'd take Justin Smith from a few years ago.

On the players from history, I could easily have taken Ronnie Lott, Deon Sanders or you know either of the 2 hall of fame QB's. But right now this team is in more need of an elite receiver than an elite QB.

    Titans:

    Jurell Casey DT
    Kendall Wright WR
    Zack Brown OLB
    Michael Roos LT
    Bernard Pollard SS

    From History

Steve McNair.. a durable QB :pac:

Poor Titans, the current team don't even have 5 players you'd like to keep, you have to make do with 4! :P

    Browns

Joe Thomas - Top 3 left tackle in the game, Never missed a snap in 7 years.

Alex Mack - Top 3 Centre in the game, Never missed a snap in 5 yeards.

Joe Haden - Top 6 corner in the game, likes the odd PED :o but a good aggressive corner. Shuts down elite receivers, will have to concentrate more against weaker teams.

Keke Mingo - Just picked over Rubin, an average year one but i saw flashes and predict this kid is going to burst on to the scene year two. Really Athletic and a great motor.

Josh Gordon - Off field stuff aside, he's the most talented player on the Browns roster and can't be left out.

From history -- Jim Brown would be the easy pick here but i'm only an NFL and Browns fan for the last six years and there was only one guy who i was genuinely sad to see go and would put my life on.

    Automatic Phil :o

Rivers, Fluker, Weddle, Butler and Allen.

Alumni - LT or Leslie O'Neal if we went back to 4-3 D.

    (Bolts)

Forte- The key man in the Trestman offence. 1,200 yards plus on the ground, credible receiving threat and pass protector. Nuff said.

Kyle Long- I didn’t know what an O-line was until last year. Long is the future of ours. Beast.

Jay- He’s the franchise QB. Needs to get more disciplined in his decisions but the curve is positive- I’m confident of that.

Alshon and Marshall. When some of the new faces in the D establish themselves I can omit one of these. But for now they’re straight in. Two absolute studs.

For the historical player I'll go Payton. Just sad I never saw the great man play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

I'd go with the same five as Mike: Flacco, Suggs, Monroe as my main three. The three most important positions on the field covered - QB, LT and pass rusher. Then Torrey Smith and Ladarius Webb as my remaining two.

For my historic player I'd go with Ed Reed though. I just think with the way the game has gone and with so much focus on the passing game that one of the best safety's of all time would have a bigger impact than one of the best MLB's of all time.

    What he said!

Add in Reggie White on defence as the historic player. Can only go by watching old tape of White but he was an absolute animal of a DE, backed up by his stats.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭Guffy

    From current crop

Forte, top 5 rb in the league atm

Marshall and Jeffrey: current offensive system further enhances these two pro bowlers

Tillman: just about as age is catching up with him but still a top cb, if near the bottom of that top rung.

I'd rather take a gamble with a player yet to wear the jersey than our current injury prone dodgy 'franchise' QB

Allen: if he can replicate his viking form should be a great addition (last year not so great tbf).

Past--- I'm going to limit myself to players I have seen play here and bring back

Urlacher: absolute talisman in the middle of the D. Was sorely missed last year.

Jason Pierre-Paul - All-Pro DE if he can sort his back out
Victor Cruz - Best slot in the league
Will Hill - Again All-Pro calibre player but needs to sort out his issues
Antrel Rolle - Good player, great leader
Justin Pugh - Developing tackle, great potential, high ceiling.

Lawerence Taylor - LT, nothing else to be said

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭Lionbacker

Megatron - Greatest receiver in the game today.

Suh - Beast in the trenches.

Stafford - Needs to improve his accuracy but is the still the franchise QB.

Tulloch - Sure tackler and one of the leaders of the defence.

Warford - One of the top guards in the league in his rookie season.

Past player - Barry Sanders - Need i say more.

It's actually surprisingly easy to do this for the Seahawks, as not many players stand out from the current cohort, it's the depth that sets them apart.

The obvious contenders for a top 5 would be Wilson, Lynch, Bennett, Sherm and Thomas.

Historical player would be Walter Jones.

    Can't argue with those.

Historical player: how to narrow it down to just one? I can't even narrow it down to one position!

White, Butler, Nitschke, Woods, Lofton, Sharpe...

...but seeing as AR is staying on as QB we'll give him another weapon: Don Hutson.

Eli Manning - 2 SBs. I believe in Eli

Antrel Rolle - Great leadership on D and interesting quotes during the week

    Historic Player - Lawrencew Taylor

    Prob greatest LB ever.

Marcedes Lewis - Always been a solid, if unspectacular TE

Paul Posluszny - Guy has bossed our D since we got him from the Bills

Marqise Lee - because even without playing a single game, he'll probably be our most solid WR (kinda depressing, wish I could be adding Justin Blackmon in here)

Sen'Derrick Marks - has brought disruption back to the D-Line for the first time since John Henderson and Marcus Stroud

Josh Scobee - because no one has been as dependable as this man

Past player would have to be either Jimmy Smith or Fred Taylor. Smith, purely for the fact that he was our last really top quality WR. But at the same time, Fred really was an outstanding RB in his younger years and the tandem he formed with MJD was something special

I'm not doing one of these but seeing Patriots fans leaving out Wilfork is just a shock to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭FreeOSCAR

Mo Wilkerson - Easily one of the best all round DE's in the league.

Sheldon Richardson - Chap will be an All-Pro this year, defending DROTY. Others had better stats but this man dominated.

Nick Mangold - Still a top 5 Center. Holds his own against all DT's he comes up against.

Eric Decker - Already our best WR (which wasn't hard) but I think he's in for a big year in Gang green.

Chris Ivory - Excellent bruiser and very underrated back, not the best hands but he won us games last year with his bruising running. Should benefit more this year having CJ taking reps beside him.

    Historical
Curtis Martin - Probably the best Jet I've ever seen on tape and one of the best Running Backs of all time.

Do I have to keep 5?

Khalil Mack - He looks like a good prospect
Nick Roach - Solid MLB who is the captain of the defense, young enough at 28 as well.
Rod Streater - Great find as an undrafted free agent. Has got a lot of potential.
DJ Haden - First round pick last year, not much else talent on the team to select over him
Stefan Wisneiski - Purely for the bloodline. A lot of semi decent players I could have selected here, not many good ones. Denarius Moore is very unlucky to miss out.

    Historical
Jerry Rice - This was much tougher, hard not to go with Rice though due to his longevity.

Manning if he was five or more years younger. Don't really need to explain this.
Miller - he's one of the best defensive players in the game, off field issues aside
Clady - You build a team around a QB, a pass rush and a franchise LT. If you've got that you'll be alright
Ware - On that same point. Keep a ferocious pass rush and him and Miller are about as good a pair as it gets.
D.Thomas - Gotta have weapons and he's been one of the better WRs to play for Denver.

    Andrew Luck
    Reggie Wayne
    Robert Mathis
    Vontae Davis
    TY Hilton

Obviously would love to say Manning or Marvin but could do with a young Freeney tearing it up.

Mo Wilkerson(24)- the best 3-4 DE not named JJ Watt

Sheldon Richardson(23)- After a superb rookie season, i can only see this guy getting better

Nick Mangold(30)- Although I'm trying to stay with youth, I cant turn down Mangolds experience and intelligence, will be the anchor of the o-line

Jeremy Kerley(25)- as bad as the Jets offense was last year, it went to absolute sh1te when Kerley got injured. The model of consistency

Dee Milliner(22)- Milliners rookie season was shaky to say the least, but he did make some real strides on the back end of the season. This one is a gamble but I think he become a star in the secondary

Historical player- Joe Namath- in recent history the QB position has been a source of nightmare for Jets fans, what better way to fix that than bringing in the greatest Jets signal caller Broadway Joe
