I've always been a sort of 'play-along-a-sing-song' sort of guitarist - I have an old electric that I've never really used much and I've never really had any effects pedals for, BUT...

I've just bought one of these babies, second hand...

I haven't even plugged it in yet (just about to after this post), but I'm about to start experimenting like I've never done before.

But, can anyone tell me please:

Is there a website that tells you what effects to use for what song? For example, is there somewhere that tells me that Clapton made his guitar weep gently by using Overdrive set to x, Delay set to y, or that Knopfler's mate Guitar George would have made his guitar cry and sing (if he had wanted to) by using Chorus or whatever?

Alternatively, if there is no such website, then is there any thread here on Boards or anywhere else where guitarists share their own advice - as in "I dunno what Knopfler does, but when I play 'Sultans', this is the setup I use..."

Finally, if no such thread already exists here, would anyone be willing to share a few hints and tips and suggestions with me, please?

    Many thanks in advance.

ps The Link I've included above is deffo worth a look. The band playing has Harrison, Clapton and Jeff Lynne on guitar, Elton John, Mike Lindup and Jools Holland on keys, Ringo Starr and Phil Collins on drums, Ray Cooper on percussion and Mark King on bass. Truly a supergroup.

There's this, but there's no guarantee that you'll get the sounds you need. The best thing to do is get familiar to all the different effects sounds on it and then try and create the sound yourself!

Thanks for that. It's not exactly the world's most comprehensive database, but it is exactly the type of thing I was asking about!

Now to try to put some of what's there to good use!

great starter to try things out.

some folk will then move to individual pedals, personally, I moved back to higher end multiFX units.....

bear in mind that a strat will sound different to a Les Paul through the same FX.

and, for recording, guitarists will use different FX for every song, but live?

not so much. I saw an excellent wedding band a while back and the guitarist had three settings. clean, a little crunch and full distortion. he played everything from the green green grass of home to sweet child of mine with just those three sounds.

    and he was GREAT!
