Will insurance renewal quote go down based on location?

Hey, so I got my renewal quote few weeks ago and today decided to call and pay it (it's not yet out of date).

A month ago I moved from Mountjoy/Gardiner area to Citywest area.
Called my insurance today changed address and when I said I want to pay it they said they cannot accept payment as they need to contact insurance first (in UK, these are just brokers) and my premium will change. When I asked will it go down or up they said they don't know and never called back (I assume they will tomorrow).

Does location affect insurance much? I am 20 and 2 years NCB and btw they never asked is it kept in parking or on street.

    Thanks.

Yes location may have an effect on the premium. I doubt it would be much but it all depends on the risk of the area. I live in Clondalkin and my premium is 300 more than it would be in wexford, Im also 20 with 2 years NCB but Dublin city centre is a high risk area so it may go down moving out to citywest it depends on the risk of the area.

Yes it does. Insurance companies gather information and statistics on things like car theft, vandalism, etc. These statistics can point to these being either high or low in a specific location meaning the risk of an insurance claim can be higher or lower.

Yeah it varies hugely in Dublin. The difference between a postcode is often 15%, even through its the same suburb

Oh, thanks for answers, I hope mine will go down even more :D

I'd be surprised if it doesn't go down. When I bought my car two years ago, I was also living in Dublin 1. Out of curiosity, I asked what my quote would be for my brothers address in Castleknock. I don't remember the exact difference in the quote, but it was at least a couple of hundred euros. Then again, other factors were in play too....was the car going to be parked up at night on a public road, or in a locked garage? Was it going to be parked in a private, gated, controlled access apartment complex, or in a driveway that anyone can access. So, its not just about the postal code.

    Got call from insurance,
Price didn't change a single cent so stays same, also out of curiosity asked what if I moved from TPFT to TP only, the price difference is only 30 euro.

Damn it sucks to be 20 year old in Ireland and be driving :D

Dublin is mighty expensive compared to the rest of the republic !

Just aswell my car is always kept in the middle of nowhere in the countryside in a secure locked garage with shutters and alarm company etc :pac:

In fairness to the insurer, CityWest is sandwiched by Tallaght and Clondalkin. You haven't moved into a much lower risk locale.

Well I am in the peaceful areas, pretty much beside mountains but yeah I see the point, Tallaght is probably even in higher risk zone than city center.

But I suppose I should be happy anyways that my insurance dropped by 52% since last year.

Ask for a fully comp quote. When I was driving a particular car, it was cheaper to go fully comp than TPF&T. When I asked why, I was told that there was a lower risk from people who asked for fully comp. Happened several times on that car with different insurers.

In other advice - ring around. Lots. I got my renewal today and it was €606. Spent the afternoon looking for quotes and the all ranged from 490 - 600. I just got a quote from Topquote.ie from Allianz for 455

Sorry, I sounded like an ass there. Wasn't meaning to demean your location. Its like Bray, great areas and places you wouldn't leave a car overnight. But unfortunately all slapped with the lowest common denominator.

When I called all insurers this year again - got refused by like 4 of them and one said - what's your current price, I said it and they said: "just go with it, that's probably as cheap as you will get"

Its not all to do with crime, a lot of insurers assess the daily commute. Back in the day, Wicklow, Kildare, Carlow etc got cheaper rates than Dublin because of less crime and a lower density of vehicles on the road. Nowadays, a lot of people commute to Dublin from these places and more miles on the road increase the risk, so it can often be dearer than some city rates

same happened me last year. mind you I phoned round a few insurance companies first and got cheapest quote then challenged my current insurance company to match or beat that price. They gave me a lower quote which was not matched by other company so I stayed with the company I am currently with. This year I rang my current insurance company and got a reasonable amount off then took another €60 off and told them if they offered that figure I would stay with them, they accepted. I am currently 25, with 5 years NCB.

Mine was about 30% more expensive when I moved from Dublin to Galway (county). I understand why though, drivers here are woeful.
