Please identify the bird sound

    I live in the country and I keep hearing this strange bird call that I have never identified. It even makes the sound at night.
    It starts off like someone is blowing air through a comb+paper (if you know what I mean) and it oscillates quickly and raises pitch until it stops.
    Any idea?

    Yeah that's it..around 3 seconds and 11 seconds.

    We must be wall-to-wall snipes because I hear that sound a lot. We do live near a large bog. Are they in the trees or on the ground? I would expect them on the ground but they sound higher up.

    I don't know if they go right through the night but I've heard them pre-dawn alright.

    i was in connemara recently and we heard a lot of snipe winnowing - generally started at dusk and went on for an hour or so.

    I am in Connemara and I just went outside and heard it again. I hear it a lot at night.

    love that-great site--the obvious birdsong in background is glorious-I'm always trying to figure out what birds I'm hearing and rarely have a clue except for the obvious ones like blackbird,robin --must study some more
