Looking for a beach with a nice long walk and sand dunes to climb. Any preference on Portmarnock or Portrane?

Both have suffered a lot of coastal erosion in the past couple of winters, but I'd say that Portmarnock is probably better for dunes. You'd have to go quite far down the beach to get to them though. The top end with the steps is almost all rocks now and all the dunes we'd have played in as kids are long gone :(

Actually i would go with Donabate, nice long beach, walk to the end will bring you to the entrance of the Malahide Marina, and you could go for a coffee in the Waterside Hotel at the top of the beach

Both are nice beaches to visit but Portmarnock is better known and nearer to built up areas than Donabate.

Here are links to reviews & pics on Tripadvisor:
    Donabate: http://www.tripadvisor.ie/Attraction_Review-g211870-d4418403-Reviews-Balcarrick_Beach-Donabate_County_Dublin.html

If you like a quiet walk with fewer people around, go for Donabate.
