Amazon don't use Airmail for Ireland, afaik everything (or at least most things) comes across in a truck to an Irish warehouse and is posted from there, so should be no postage issues.
Not sure the legalities of carrying it with you out and about, but do you really want to draw that kind of attention to yourself?

Generally if you hava a valid reason for carrying it. As in it's a work tool that you need constant access to, you're ok. As far as I know.

I was stopped once with a Leatherman on my belt (not visible), but had no hassle once I said it was a work tool and I was just heading into work. Generally once you have a reason (that's valid), as far as I know you're ok.

It's just a penknife, not an offensive weapon!
There should be no problem with buying it online.

I think there are specific laws with regard to what you can carry, I don't know the exact details but basically a short, folding, non-locking blade and don't act the maggot and you're grand.

The Gardai deem anything sharp as an offensive weapon. I had a friend grilled by a gardai for having a bottle opener that was sharp. A knife is a weapon and can kill. Even a stanley knife can do some serious damage

OP I cant imagine you having any issue buying it and it being posted.

I bought a very similar one off Amazon (2 less tools) just a month ago and had no problems. Not sure about the legality of carrying them around tbh.

I meant from the perspective of ordering it, as in it's not like the OP was trying to order pepper spray or something.

Actually, I was curious so I checked just now. It is not defined as an offensive weapon.
The Gardai may deem that you are acting the maggot in some way which does constitute an offence but that's a separate issue. Be a good citizen and you're grand.

That;s ridiculous scaremongering. It would have to be found in inappropriate circumstances.

Is it appropriate to bring a penknife into a night club - probably not.

Is it appropriate to bring a penknife of a hike - Yes.

won't be any problem buying this online from amazon, gardai won't be contacting you or anything like that

    Personally I'd buy this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Leatherman-Wingman-Multi-Tool/dp/B006FMPZPW/ref=sr_1_1?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1400155619&sr=1-1&keywords=leatherman
Got a leatherman back in early 90's and its really stood the test of time, its gotten some use

It will come in the post grand, never heard of an issue.
I had a friend grilled by a gardai for having a bottle opener that was sharp.
I doubt we are hearing the full story. I used to hang around with guys and 1 or 2 eejits always gave the gardai stick, so they would go to town on them over stuff like that, trying to find anything they could nab them for.

I have had a swiss army knife taken off my going into the O2, but got it back after the concert. There was no suspicion that I was trying to go in and stab people, any security will recognize its a legitimate tool.

There is some legal limit for knives like a 3" blade or something, and daggers (sharpened both sides) are illegal. I think butterfly knives are too.

You can see some laws here, I have not read them and they might make it in a way that gardai can easily arrest you if they want, but in practise you should be OK. Sure tesco probably have 10" blades on sale that a child could probably buy, stick a picture of a tomato on the handle and you're fine, stick a skull & cross bones on it and expect it to be taken.

    14. What are Offensive Weapons?
Certain weapons have been listed as offensive weapons.
These include flick-knives, knuckledusters, swordsticks, sword umbrellas, hand and foot claws, belt buckle knives, pushdaggers, hollow kubotans, shurikens, butterfly knives, telescopic truncheons, blowpipes, kusari gama, kyoketsu shoge, manrikigusari, sap gloves, and machetes.
Katanas or 'samurai swords' were added with effect from 1 September 2009, though there are exceptions to the ban designed for collectors and martial artists. You can read the full text of the 1991 Order on offensive weapons here and the 2009 amendment to it here.
The Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990 prohibits the manufacture, importation, sale, hire or loan of offensive weapons and penalties of up to seven years imprisonment can apply.

Although its far far smaller, I carry this everywhere with me...seriously handy at times.
Have it maybe 10 years so far including 8 months where I lost it in the garden and its still going strong

I used to carry my big leatherman with me for years in a belt case, never had any issues with Gardai

You can get "airplane friendly" versions of tools nowadays with no blades.

A lot of second hand mulit-tools are rumoured to be sourced from confiscated airport stocks -which is believable.

If your amazon basket is over £25 delivery will be free, in fact if it is slightly under £25 it sometimes is still free -I think it is more likely with light/small items like this.

I got several leathermans & victorinox tools from the US, far cheaper than any EU sites.
