    Model is Hotpoint RFA17.

Why is the indicator done from green to black? I can't see anything in the manual. thanks.

Black indicates a rise in temp, turn up the stat to a higher setting, make sure the doors are closing fully and of course listen to make sure it is running. If the problem persists its no longer a diy remedy.

Not following, sorry. Do you mean there is a rise in temp in the fridge hence the temp needs adjusting backwards? Or the rise in temp in fridge suggesting a fault?

assuming the fridge is normally operating circa 3 degrees above zero and shows green but now shows black its temp is rising towards 4 to 5 degrees. Problem may be down to someone leaving the door partially open in fridge , fridge really packed tight with food etc. Turn the stat clockwise which should lower the temp, if the problem persists it is probably going down in refrigerant due to a leak

The dial is from 1-5 range. Normally at 3 as you say. Is that in degrees then so the lower the number, the colder?

Read the scale backwards, the higher the number the more heat extracted from the inside, in other words 5 = most cooling.
