Using different size tyres

My car at the moment uses 225/55/R16 tyres. Quite an unusual size I've been.

Am I right in thinking other size tyres should also fit my car ? Another size I was looking at is 245/50/R16. They are a bit wider and essentially the tyres has the same diameter as the recommended size.

Would the wider tyre be able to fit the rim ? Are there many advantages or disadvantages with going with a wider tyre ? Presume more grip, but would maybe be a bit pricier and will reduce my MPG ?

The first thing is to maintain the rolling radius. Whether the wider tyre will fit the rim is down to the pan width of the rim and the profile of the tyre and is a little trickier. Head down this page and there's a little calculator that tells you what size rims will work for a given tyre size: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html

Could have some rubbing of the tyre on the wheel arch while turning if the tyre is too large.

I wouldn't bother. More road noise, more drag, Stiffer steering.
