Hi Folks, maybe this is an impossible question, but....

I'm thinking of selling a small plantation I inherited (the annual premium has run out and it's too much hassle to upkeep).

Do any of you have a sense of which way the value of forestry is going - up or down? I'm trying to decide if it's a good time or not.

Grateful for all you knowledgeable input ;)

Well there is many factors to take into consideration when estimating the value Of the forest,
    What age is it
    species
    Size
    Volume
    Yieldclass
    location
And the management processes it has been in, eg thinning, inspection paths.

    Thanks lads

It's roughly divided into two parts. Planted winter 1993/94.

    1. Norway spruce, 12 acres, thinned once. Due a second thinning soon.
    2. Oak, 11 acres
    • Other trees also mixed in: scots pine, japanese larch, sycamore
    • I don't know about about yield class.
    • Location, Laois. Good road access

Thanks lads for the feedback. But I'm trying to figure out the direction of the market. I know predicting the future is a fool's game, but how has it been going in recent times? Up? Down? Stagnant?

Also, who buys small forestry lands? Local farmers?

    • anyone has has an interest in an investment outside of the usual
    • someone local with a few quid to spare
Advertise it in the farmers jorunal and you'll get a quick straw pole as to who would be interested, well worth the €15 it costs.
Also try forest sales.ie, i think it's Paul Lafferty.
Finally get Teagasc out to have a look at it, I think it's Liam Kelly for that area, he'll tell you within €5k what it's worth...
Stay away from auctioneers, I was looking to buy a place a few years ago and the amount of binding agreemenst they got people to sign was criminal (in my opinion), in that you were locked into them as regards selling the place for a set number of years if you wanted it to go on thier books.

just being nosy but how much would it be worth if he waited until the forest is matured and ready to cut??.reason I asking is I know a guy who has 10ha of sitka planted in 96 ,never thinned, who is thinking of selling and I reckoned he be better off keeping until mature,
