    Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice here,
I've relatives in France moving back to Ireland, they need a small truck to bring back their possessions and asked would I drive out and back with a rental truck, no problem getting the truck and it's small enough that my B car licence covers it, only thing is the insurance company will only go to 3rd party on the continent, the hire company will require fully comp.

Does anyone know if a hire company will do 3rd party on their rental or if any insurance company will do 10 days for a premium?

If I bought one on done deal would that be an idea and sell it when I come back !!!

A few mad notions I know but throwing ideas around at the moment.

    Cheers,
    Dan

If you are considering buying a van or small truck then you will more than likely require a new commercial insurance policy as it's quite likely that you will not get private vehicle cover on one; if this is the case then a policy will not be cheap. You are also going to need decent contents cover for this trip as well; you are talking about your families personal effects here and you will need to allow for the risk of damage in transit or even theft/fire en route.

Add on ferry charges (These are higher for vans and commercial vehicles and fuel/road expenses; these things are not as economical as cars and they don't travel as fast either. It's a lot of hassle for you and that's not allowing for the time and expense involved with buying and then selling the van.

If it was up to me I'd let them worry about pricing up a specialist removals company or haulage firm; they'd know what they are doing here.

Please tell us the name of the hire company that will let you rent a vehicle here, and then take it overseas.

(I've previously been told that we're not actually allowed to take a rental vehicle even into the North.)

I have used The Road Ahead to obtain quotes for removals between countries and it worked out a lot cheaper than hiring and doing it yourself (also found most companies not happy for you to take the hire vehicle onto the continent).

There is a good FAQ on vanrentals.ie - might be a good idea to have a chat with them.
