Right at the minute I'm driving a 2 litre diesel Avensis. Thinking of getting a 2 litre diesel Rav 4.Would anybody here have driven both and would know if the running costs are similar. Also is there anything specific to look out for in second hand Rav 4. All opinions welcome.

There would be quite a difference IMO. The rav is permanent 4wd and not as aerodynamic.
They also suffer from dmf failure easier than the Avensis.

    Are you going from a 97-00 TD, a 00-03 D-4D or a newer shape 03 onwards?

There'll be a big difference in mpg in that case.
Good diesel Rav4s are thin on the ground.
When I was selling them new, they were €8,500 or something more than a 1.8 2WD, so anyone that'd justify that were using them for towing or big miles.
Mpg difference between a D-4D and 1.8 was quite small when they were new, and those D-4Ds don't improve with age. The a Rav will be much slower than your avensis too.
Do you actually need a Rav4, and if so do you need diesel?

Well I would be using it for towing a good bit but from what you say I'll be thinking again

Nothing will be over economical towing :)

How's the avensis for towing, are you pulling something very heavy or what?

Towing a horse box Avensis is a fair oul work horse

To be fair, the rav would be more stable (no pun intended)

Is Avensis or Rav legally rated to tow horse and horse box. ?
