Since 2009, there as been an international Top Gun Day celebration paying tribute to the 1986 movie every May 13 yearly......

On March 3, 1969 the United States Navy established an elite school for the top one percent of its pilots. Its purpose was to teach the lost art of aerial combat and to insure that the handful of men who graduated were the best fighter pilots in the world. They succeeded. Today, the Navy calls it Fighter Weapons School. The flyers call it: TOP GUN.

First Star Wars and now this. Does every film need it's own "day" now?

I believe it started with Groundhog Day.

Well obviously not. There wouldn't be enough days in the year for all the films like.

Amazing that an entire real world event grew from that movie.

What a Film. Sad that some people see it as old and right it off. I remember watching the premier on RTE2, must have watched it another 10 times. Think I'll watch it again soon.

If the film doesn't have it's own day how are they to know when to release the inevitable reboot?

Heard an interview with jerry bruckhiemer & Tom cruise about a week ago. They reckon they'll be shooting the sequel by the end of the year, with Cruise taking on the instructor role & them tackling the issue of real pilot skills Vs drones....

    So there you go...

    1. Tom Cruise is a hotshot.
    2. Tom Cruise has a crisis of confidence.
    3. Hot chick helps Tom Cruise regain confidence by doing sex on him.
    4. Tom Cruise becomes the best hotshot of all.
    5. Hot Chick and Tom Cruise do sex on each other and live happily ever after.

    Rinse, Repeat.

I believe its genesis was in a National Geographic article about jet pilots for which Simspon/Bruckheimer bought the rights; a plot and screenplay were probably the very final elements created and they may even have still been writing as they were shooting-I know this was the case for many of their films. Anyone who grew up in the 80s should read 'High Concept' to help them understand just how dumb popular culture became in that period.

They should make an Iranian version.

They should make an Iranian version.

Yeah, seeing as they still do have F-14s while the USN scrapped all of their own.

Days of thunder had the exact same story, just replaced the jets with stockcars.

Brilliant flick, one of my favourites.

Little known fact, it won the Oscar for 'Best Movie Ever'

The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where crowds as large as 40,000 have gathered to celebrate the holiday since at least 1886!

Top Gun should be hailed by all as the inspiration for Hot Shots.

Sometimes movies can create false memories.

Life does imitate art sometimes. Don't be so close-minded.

I love Tom Cruise, but this is true.

Then he was an oblivious drone repair guy. Pretty good oblivious drone repair guy.
Until he has a crisis of confidence and he meets a good looking woman who teaches him to stop being an oblivious drone repair guy.

Actually, I think it was most awesome movie ever......

along with most plot holes in a single scene.......

.......Mav's F-14 won best supporting actor

'Ever' has been reduced to 500 years from the first Oscar awarded, still a big deal but not quite as big as the original 'Best Movie Ever' Oscar criteria.

Some films dont need a plot.

Some films play by their own rules.

    Like real Americans.
