Driving to work this morning I lost power steering on my 2003 Mondeo. Dropped it into the garage and they're telling me the pipe into the power steering pump burst open and it's €390 to replace. Seems very steep to me for a pipe and searching ebay, what looks like the correct part is only about €20. Are these an absolute pig to fit or something?

Given that the clutch is it's way out I'm thinking it's scrap yard time as it'd be over €800 to replace the clutch and fly wheel but if I could fix the power steering for under €100 or so, I'd be happy enough to run it until the clutch gives up entirely.

Any ideas? Or figures for what I could expect for a 2003 1.8 Petrol Mondeo Zetec spec from a breakers?

Its no big deal to replace the power steering pipe but the pipes are expensive to buy new from a dealer.

As for being charged eight hundred euro for a clutch that is very expensive as it is a single mass flywheel which doesnt require replacement.

So sounds like it's worth looking for a second quote then? Or ordering the part on-line and getting an indy to do the install? (guessing power steering isn't something for a total amateur to fvck about with!)

Funny, I was told it was a dual mass flywheel whilst on the phone. (Engine is the UK 1.8 Duratec as the car was imported shortly after it was first registered).

Make sure you know what pipe you need its usually the high pressure one from the pump to the rack that goes.

Its really not a big deal to replace if your anyway handy at all.

Pm me your vin and ill check if it has a dual mass flywheel in it but doubt you would get a flywheel and clutch done for that money.

I'll PM you the VIN later...

What kind of money would you think it'd be possible to get it sorted for? If I could get the clutch and pipe done for a reasonable figure I'd be tempted to hang onto it.
